 Nah, Illidan was just defeated- it was a close fight. Afterwards he supposedly just runs off as Arthas goes to claim the Frozen Throne (you don't see Illidan run off though, it's just assumed).

 Yes, in WoW, and yes, it's very difficult to kill the "big" NPCs.

To be specific, about 100 guilds have thus far killed Illidan (Illidan is currently considered the hardest "boss" in the game). That's about 40 people per guild, or 4000 people. There are well over 9 million people playing the game, so it's uncommon, yes.

I'm also a Gladiator from last season (and am on track to be on again this season) which is a title for those who engage in multiplayer battles -- against each other, rather than co-operative play against computer controlled monsters (such as Illidan). The Gladiator title is given to those in the top .005 of the skill ladder, and is awarded at the end of each "season," which is about 3-4 months long. I'm currently within that margin, but obviously I could drop down before the season ends in 2 weeks.
