After reading this I'll have to make sure I get new Xbox 360. No way I'd buy a used one when it could be modded. Also I'm glad Microsoft is fighting this piracy issue.

Discuss.

You can buy a used one, just check if the warranty seal is intact..

Exactly, The old market place was fine, i could watch what i purchased offline, but now.... i must be connected to the internet..stupid as hell

@Heruamon

Im sure, if your not on LIVE your not watching what you legally bought. Im done buying shit on XBL.

Physcial Media Based Format FTW!

I laughed out loud from the word "scary" in the article.

If you keep to the rules, you will be fine. That's pretty much it. Lets go fill out a gray area and pretend like its 1984 for video games.

I can play my games and videos offline.

So long as you are on the console that you originally downloaded them with and on the gamertag originally setup for that console, you can always view your stuff offline.  If you have downloaded stuff on another console and then migrate over to a new console or transfer your hard drive to a new console, you have to be signed in to watch content and play downloaded games.  Or you could use the license transfer thing they made a while back.  Not sure where you get it, though.

Yeah you can transfer the license to another 360. Its not too difficult either. Its somewhere on the xbl site or something. Can't remember.

Thats why I will stick to physical media for as long as it exists, because I don't like being screwed around with this crap.

That article is TERRIBLE.

  1. They seem to make MS bad for not explaining their banning process.  They don't explicitely tel you these things so it's harder for pirates, the very people their condemning at the start of the article, to get around this process.
  2. They assume re-verify only means they make sure they only banned the correct console.  They do not know that, for all they know that's simply the term they use.  Who knows, for all they know they might be right that it's simply a flag that gets turned on your console from the background app that they say is there and all it takes to re-investigate is to re-verify that flag was set.
  3. If you do the crime, make sure you can do the crime.  Who gives a fuck if pirates lose all their DLC they bought?
  4. THIS DOESN'T SAY ANYWHERE COSMETIC MODIFICATIONS GETS YOU BANNED!  Where the fuck does this keep coming up?  Is it from the unauthorized upgrades?  Are people really that stupid to think that means cosmetic upgrades?  Jesus people, grow a damn brain.  You won't get banned for modding your case, the most that will be done is having your warranty voided.
  5. It's very clear in the terms that only MS can make repairs if you want the warranty to cover them.  It's no secret that if you have some outside person repair your 360, your warranty is gone.  I have no idea why they act so surprised.  If you want the free service, you just have to deal with the extra time.

Really, this is just a terrible article and it seems like it's only out to villify Microsoft.

@ Farmland
yes you can thats what i did :) works perfectly and it was so easy.

So that means that I'll get banned for repairing my Xbox myself?

I got the RROD a year ago and fixed it by replacing the X-clamps that hold the heatsink together with the motherboard..that, and also replaced the cheap thermal compound that comes from factory with a quality thermal ceramic compound, also I made the stock fans run at a constant 12v, plus I modded the case by cutting out the back vents for better air flow output and on top of the case above the heatsink (horizontally) I cut out a 4 inch circle and added a 8mm fan that blows fresh air into the console that also runs at constant 12v ..

So, it won't be fair if my console gets banned just because I didn't send it to Microsoft for repair instead.

No, you only voided your warranty.

I don't see how MS would know that you had it fixed by a 3rd party source, but that does make me wonder something.

If you send it to MS and they see that the seal has been broken and repairs have been done in the past, provided that you eventually decided to send it to them, would they send you back a banned console?

This is the part that caught my attention from the OP:

I’m afraid it gets worse. Piracy isn’t the only thing that can get an Xbox 360 banned from Xbox Live. If you have any repairs or cosmetic modifications done to your console by anyone other than Microsoft, you run the risk of getting banned if they find out about it.

It means your are force to send it to Microsoft for repair ...imo that's BS.

And no,  if your seal of warranty is broken they (Microsft) wont send you a banned console back instead they will charge you for repair fees.

This is just the article speculating.  Unless you actually modded something to play pirated games or "backups" it's nothing to worry about.  Again, this article is just trying to scare peopel and it's a shitty way to "report" things.

Sorry, but I can't believe people are actually going to defend pirating and modding to cheat...that's riddiculous.
