Forums - Sony - Cell Processor: "Dead In The Water"

^ The smart move would be to use a similar cell structure and simply improve the dev tools to make development easier.
Give casual devs a easy way to code and give those huge production companies the tools they need to get every last drop out of the performance.

A big problem on the ps3 isn't the processor itself, but the bottlenecked RAM (or was it the video card that was the bottleneck?)

Well that's what I think Sony should do and to an extent I think Sony will do this as well.

Use the Cell processor as a base. Build from it, but it would still be a new piece of tech. They could add 6 more cores for example.

Yeah, cell is great, but the dev tools need to be re-tooled.
I'm all for more cores. Hopefully, they could start programming themselves !

Last I checked Sony is a "hardware" company and all this means is that Sony has the prototype and the finished product.  They can farm out the fabrication to any firm willing to manufacture the Cell; dead in the water seems like a miss leading thread title to me.  Plus they have the technology so they (Sony) can make improvements on it with the help of contracted IBM engineers.  I believe the thread is meant purely for flaimbait (or vgdollars)......nothing more to see, everyone move along.

Fabrication of a processor is not something you "farm out", especially a chip designed by IBM to begin with.

Well yeah. There's always room for improvement.

just so we're clear I do agree with your statements. Not trying to start any type of arguement. lol.

Wouldn't be the first time i've been reported. lol.

I'm going to venture that you were reported for having 0 platinum trophies. Who can take you seriously, honestly?

The intelligent move would be to add a couple SPEs and maybe an extra core and just upgrade the GPU and CPUs. Which is precisely what I feel they will do. No reason to reinvent the wheel. Upgrading this machine with a more advanced chipset would be cheap and effective.

Unless they add in some on die cache I think it'd be a waste of time. More memory Sony!
