Forums - Sony - Rumor: PS4 Gets Unequalled Graphics

Rumors or not, that take on the DS4 looks awesome!

CURRENTLY PLAYING:  Warframe, Witcher 2

Hmm afte this artikle the PS3 gets a GPU not from Nvidia and not from ATI but from IMGTEC. They said the PowerVR chip with the TBDR technology was the reason why the DC had so extremly good Graphics back in 1998. And they said that for the PSP2 they will use IMGTEC too but it will be a 5XTseries chip while the PS4 gets a high End 6 series chip with unknown specs. They said the IMGTEC chip has a special technology called TBDR and this means the IMGTEC Chip can have 3.5 times the power of a same sized Ati/Nvida chip despite it will have the same costs. They said that the PS3 GPU was the weak spot of the PS3. But the Cell is such a powerful beast that it makes up the weakness from the GPU.

Would it be a good decision to go for IMGTEC instead of Nvidia/Ati ?

And is this TBDR Technology really that good that it can beat comparable Ati/Nvdia chips with a faktor of 3.5 ?

And this is how it begins.......

@Lastgengamer

Yeah you're right. Especially if some of the tech-heads get in here and teach us a few thing. Then definitely worth it.

if I could understand the gibberish from google translator then I would be not only able to 100% understand what the article is saying but also be able to give a more informed asnwer, having said that I'll try my best.

From rumours I've read the PowerVR as mentioned in the article was initially rumoured to be for the PSP2. Just when the company announced their latest mobile CPU/GPU chip, which was designed with low power consumption and low heat output with a high performance output, it was reviled that Sony had signed a deal with them...what Sony would be using these chips for no one knew but at that time Sony was rumoured to be working on a new PSP, this was before the PSP go was revealed and announced, so people put them to together and the PSP2 rumour was born.

Now as far as this chip being in the PS4 will have to be seen, Surely Sony do not want another fuck up with backwards comparability, especially now with DLC and DD content, in which case I think they will stick with Nvidia as it'll be easiest way to guarantee 100% backwards compatability on the graphics side, it just mean less work for Sony while ensuring that people can transition over with out losing all the content they've already purchased....this purchased content is what's locked the user to the platform, if Sony doesn't provide backwards compatibility for all DLC stuff, then not only will they piss off their customers but they'll be free to jump ship.

As for the CPU, again Sony will I think stay with CELL, weather it be developed by Sony and Toshiba, or a derivative of CELL developed by IBM. Yes IBM ceased R&D on CELL, but that will not stop them from using any CELL concepts that work well, which is essentially what they said, it's highly probable that IBM could potentially develop a CPU which has enough similarities to CELL that it would be ideal for Sony to use in the PS4 to again ensure backwards compatibility with out to much work on Sony's part to make things work. Now this CELL like CPU could also be intels Larabee since it's has very similar stuff, but it's just a matter of seeing what works best for Sony.

So unless PowerVR chip can provide the backwards compatibility Sony wants and needs, I highly doubt that they will be the company used for the PS4, PSP2 yes but not PS4.

Now I know allot will cite that backwards compatibility will be ditched just as it was on the PS3 in favour or something else, but unlike PS2 to PS3 backwards compatibility, PS3 to PS4 compatibility will be crucial and it's all down the DLC people bought, with out a PS3 or a PS4 to play it, all the content a user bought will be lost, so a person who's bought something is now locked to that specific platform and this isn't something Sony can fuck up, because if people over-racted when PS2 compatibility was removed from the PS3, then they'll go suicidal if PS3 compatibility is removed from PS4, and if there anything Sony lost learnt this generation is 1) not to make such an expensive console, and 2) not to remove features specially backwards compatibility.

my 2 cents

What are your thoughts on PSP backwards compatibility between PSP and PSP2

So basically

PS4 is gonna have better graphics than the PS3???

Of course it will, Will it have better graphics than the Nextbox? Possibly.

what I found funny about this article is that.. the specs aren't revealed for the GPU, yet it is already "unequaled" lol. :P But yes, the PS4 will follow in the tradition of all Sony consoles, and have the best graphics around at the time of release.

I hope next gen they used a dedicated PPU, That way games will feel real...

Future consoles will have better graphics than past consoles. Amazing.

Well silicon is very dedicated at its job. But no, the idea of having a seperate PPU died with Physx when they were bought out. Physics belongs on the GPU or the CPU.

Tease.
