Forums - Sony - How much does it cost Sony to keep PSN free?

I would expect nothing with the costs mostly being pushed off on the developers.

After all they do have a tax for developers based on size of bandwith.

I'd imagine PSN as a whole probably makes money rather then loses it.

Sure it could make MORE money if it charged more... but i don't think it's like the PS3.

Xbox Live just is a giant money maker.

You were discussing the profitability of the PS3 console, I explained how this does not matter :)

That's not what I was discussing. We were discussing the Live price vs the 360/PS3 price difference. No one said anything about profitability of the PS3, it's about profitability of the PSN.

"Maybe from the gamer perspective, but not from Sony's as the PS3 is surely more expensive to build than the 360."

I beg to differ :)

If you don't know how to read replies in the context of the posts they're replying to that's not something I'm going to fix.

It's impossible to determine the profitability of the PSN... well, Sony know but they ain't telling.

But there is another definition of cost we can consider, and that is the diffeence between the total profit with charging for it and without.

So making some fairly big assumptions
All PS3 users will subscribe
There will be no costs with marketing this system, or profit taken by retailers
This does not decrease PS3 sales at all

27 million consoles @ $50 per console per year = [edit]1.35 billion per year, which is approximately equal to the divisions annual losses[/edit]

Scottie more like $1.35 billion.
