Van rompuy is European in the first place;

BTW Catherine Ashton (UK) becomes minister of Foreign Affairs....So UK won something as well.

Foreign affairs sounds better suited for an UK candidate if I think about it.

lol, never heard of her, anyone got info? which party she belongs to for instance

Labour.

The reason why you probably never have heard about her is possible because she spend most of her carreer not in the UK but in Brussels as European Commissioner for Trade

the tv coverage here is mostly whining tories, so can you tell me exactly what the President and Foreign minister will do? is it like they do in a single nation just for the whole of the EU or something else?

Just confirmed, Herman Van Rompuy will be the first European President.

I wonder what this'll mean for Belgium. The country has been pretty instable during the last few years.

You mean this could mean we have stories again about the end of Belgium?

Oh goddamned  let them wait a few weeks with that I am getting my Belgian passport in three weeks XD.

Possibly. Depends on who becomes the prime minister. The Walloons absolutely don't want Yves Leterme, while he's really popular in Flanders.

But something will have to happen anyhow. About 2 years ago a law was passed (Brussel-Halle-Vilvoorde) because of the Flemish majority. The regional goverments are slowing it down, but they can only do that for so long.

I don't know exactly what they will be doing, but it's nothing compared to president of the U.S.

*Opens beer and sings the EU anthem...Edit twice lolz*.

okay, according to the BBC news site, the president of the EU is kind of like a chair person and organises things, theres also a good Q&A on there on the Lisbon treaty - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6901353.stm

So who will be our next prime minister (Belgium), this is going to be fun.

Ah so much drama to look forward to. Walloon's blaming Flamings, Flamings blaming Walloon's.
I really wouldn't mind if Flanders joined the Netherlands and Wallonia France, but what to do with Brussels.
