It's likely very real. Some groups that do this aren't interested in the piracy aspect and like to do this just for the accomplishment of it all. They probably know that what they're sitting on can and will be used for the wrong reasons and they don't want to see that happen. There was a group that found an exploit on the PSPGo two days after release inside a downloaded game file for a specific game, but wouldn't release their work or the name of the exploited game because they didn't want it getting out of hand.
