despite owning a MegaDrive, i was a little late to get into any wars. (bought in 1995 i think)
That and living in the UK meant there wasn't so much contest, Sega ruled Europe.

Well Atari couldn't have made the Lynx and Jaguar otherwise, even if those did lose them that money. Also, the Street Fighter II story is a bit off. According to Capcom's page of million sellers (http://ir.capcom.co.jp/english/data/million.html), the SNES Street Fighter II games outsold the Genesis games, but still having the games on the Genesis was a major help to Sega. |
You are right and the author is a bit off on PC Engine graphic capabilites too :
" [...]and the Turbografx's 8-bit processor with supporting graphics chips that NEC falsely advertised as a 16-bit core. "
Indeed PC Engine GPU was a 16 bit chip and games like Soldier Blade prove it.
Quite frankly , I think that Genesis/Megadrive was a good system but Snes is simply unachievable ( I'm refering to games not harware itself ).

^ lots of people made similar assumtions of the N64, saying it was called 64 because it had 32bit graphics and 32bit sound.

As terrible as Sony's PR problems have been, at least they're not making claims as absurd as "Blast Processing" and slinging mud left and right the way Sega did in that era. |
Nintendo didn't mudsling at all. Which is why they tried to crucify Sega in front of Congress, of all places.

Thank you Mortal Kombat!
Remember when the Sega rep pulled out the Super Scope in front of Congress and claimed Nintendo was turning children into mindless gunmen?
Ah, good times.
There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

But that wasn't prime time TV! Just Congress! They were just trying to push out their competition by getting them banned by law, not trying to make their hardware look inferior through bogus claims! Sheesh!
/sarcasm
Don't worry rocketpig. I'm not blind to Nintendo's transgressions. :)
Mmm, those commercials bring back memories.
"Genesis does what Nintendon't" Still drives me nuts. But in a nostalgic way, instead of a "ARGH HOW DARE YOU INSULT NINTENDO *hulks out*" kind of way.
And I still haven't forgotten the SMB3 commercial where it zooms into Mario's face.

I'm seriously waiting for either a documentary or a reenactment of all this. It could start with the 8-bit battles and follow all the madness with mudslinging and Congress and then the movie ends with Smash Bros. Brawl comes out. There shall be no more console wars after that. So it is written.

Luckily for all of us, Nintendo got a big helping of humble pie and they're not nearly as evil as they were from the late 80s to the mid 90s.
I really disliked Nintendo for a long time during the NES/SNES period. Their strong-arming of third parties and all-out attacks on Sega were really sickening.
My, how things have changed. Nintendo was evil, Sony/Sega were the good guys. Now Sony is trying to use their clout to cram tech people don't want down our throats and have tainted their relationship with many developers while MS is doing their best "we're the good guy, honest" impersonation and Nintendo keeps printing money through good ol' fashioned kick-ass products. Meanwhile, Sega is an empty shell of their previous selves.

@rocketpig,
So the morale of the story is...go evil first..make lots of money..then convert back to the good side and make lots more money?
