Forums - PC - Freezing with Valve's games problem

I posted this over at the Steam forums but still no replay so I'm trying my luck with the Chartz.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I bought 2 games so far off Steam (Team Fortress 2 - Red Alert 3) and I have the L4D2 demo. My problem happens with TF2 and L4D2 (RA3 is fine) In TF2 it doesn't always happen, actually it's better than before but it still occurs even today after I choose the server and load it sometimes it will freeze on the message screen and the only why I can get out is with Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
In the L4D2 Demo it does the same but some times it will even freeze on the loading screen and it's far worse in L4D2 than TF2 (BTW it only freezes when I try to go online, Single player plays fine).

I've manged to play some online games with L4D2 but most of the time it will freeze, on the contrary TF2 will play most of the time but it freezes every now and then.

I was using Windows 7 RC and recently switched to Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit ver). My other PC games play fine they do freeze from time to time but that's normal since it only happen maybe once a month or something but with Valve's games it's very often when I try to play online.

Here my specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720 AM3 2.8GHZ 7.5MB
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3
GPU: XFX Radeon HD 4850 625MHZ 512MB
RAM: Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz

I have both games on pretty much max settings on 1360x768 resolution.

Appreciate any help I can get.

Maybe you're using outdated drivers or something? I dunno.

Yeah, i'd check the drivers.

Also make sure that your games downloaded correctly...

My drivers (the GPU ones anyway) are up to date, and I had to redownload Steam at some point so I redownloaded TF2 but I still got some problems.

Man I would really like to pre order L4D2 I like the demo but not until this whole deal goes away.

Switch offscreen rendering mode to backbuffer?

Troubleshooting is a PITA sometimes. If that doesn't work, you might try turning all the video/sound settings to the bare minimum, and see if it still crashes. If it doesn't, turn things on one at a time until you figure out what causes the problem.

It always freezes when connecting to a server. You will just have to wait a bit!

Wait, I misread your post, you say it freezes during the loading screen... but do you at least give it a chance to continue normally, or have you just been immediately pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete?

I have a similar rig to yours, and the same thing happens to me in L4D, as well as UT3 or Borderlands loading screens, that is, a momentary freeze, but it doesn't actually have any impact on gameplay, or the game's stability. Maybe that's the case with you as well?

Well, I just tried putting everything on the lowest settings possible even though the loading went fine when the message of the day or whatever poped up the game was still going fine, but as soon as I hit the 'OK' button to remove the message it froze. I waited for a minute but nothing happend. The funny thing is that when I bring up the Task Manger to shut it down it says the the game is still "Running" and the usual "Not Responding". As I said this only happens when I try the Online, The single player with AI runs fine.

I'm running Windows, but thx for the suggestion tried it and it didn't work.

@jefforange89
Read what I wrote above and hopefully it will clear up the confusion.

I just noticed that you actually do have almost the same setup as I am (AMD/ATI, 4GB of Ram and Win 7 64 bit) great to hear that it's working fine for you gives me hope to figure out the problem. What settings do you have L4D2 demo on(that is if you have it) ?

Like I said only a problem with Source games everything else is fine.

I deleted it cause I was running out of space on my SSD, and the preload was open for the full game... but probably something along the lines of max for everything, multi-core rendering enabled, etc.

There have apparently been a number of bugs with the demo, though, so I wouldn't let that bother you.

Also, maybe this is relevant? http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/550880-two-games-running-source-engine.html

At any rate, I just ran this search, maybe you'll find something of value here: http://www.google.ca/search?q=source+engine+online+freeze&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a

Ha...
Sorry, I saw "registry keys" and thought it was Windows.
