Forums - Sony - Sony: “New IP is the lifeblood of the industry.”

Sorcery said:
I think Sony's first and second parties have done an excellent job with creating new IP's, and it's a major reason why I support them more than any other console right now. I'm getting tired of the refuse that Nintendo and Microsoft keep spewing out, but the PS3 has repeatedly exposed me to brand new games.

Without the PS3, gaming would feel empty to me (outside of all the cheap, "micro" games that get released, like World of Goo, Braid, etc).

I'll admit that it'd be nice to get a fourth Crash game by Naughty Dog, or another Jet Moto, but at some point in time I know I'd get bored with it.

Nintendo and Microsoft do their fair share of new IPs also. You do know that right?

Nintendo: Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Nintendogs, Brain Age, Professor Layton, Hotel Dusk, etc.

Microsoft: Gears of War, Infinite Undiscovery, Crackdown, Kameo, Viva Pinata, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, etc.

OP is even more funny, if we remember Sony's new IP not selling much. It's like damage control coming from Sony here, actually: "yeah, we suck @ selling, but we do favor to all the industry!"

I don't care if it's new IP or if it's not, it's fun and content which matter. Obviously, someone forgot to tell this to Michael.

Actions speak louder than words. The industry as a whole keeps going back to the same well, time and time again. Not like one can blame them. With production costs so high, it's hard to put money behind a totally new IP.

Well, Sony KEEPS doing that though. They've put money behind new IP after new IP. Thank goodness for it too, it's what made the 32-Bit gen so great.

yea, it is pretty much this generation Sony is stepping up the creation of New IP's, I myself have been very happy with all three companies this year. Microsoft has also put forth effort into new IP's, Nintendo has also so to me it has been a win.. win.. for this generation so far

Here, here...... someone who greatly appreciates the industry in full. Much respect.

thank's, I think this generation is one of the best game generation's ever, there is just so much new IP's that to me that I am having a blast even without some of my prev. Generation's FAV.

like

Littlebigplanet

flow "love that one alot"

eyepet "cannot wait for that one to hit the state's"

Mass Effect "love playing that one"

aahh... Fallout 3 "thought the fun ended with fallout, fallout 2 and was my fav. Fallout:tactic's" now I love fallout 3 even more

Wii sports: bowling my good man bowling

Wii : game's in general love the game's

just some of the game's this generation that have been great, and going forward there will be even more I just cannot see why many think that a NEW Generation is going to start sooner rather than later.

I AM BOLO

100% lover "nothing else matter's" after that...

ps:

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

Uncharted: DF sold over 2 million units.

LBP sold over 2 million.

First Resistance sold over 3 million.

inFamous is near 1 million.

Heavenly Sword sold over 1 million.

Quality is subjective, but many Sony exclusives this gen have been getting great reviews.

Wanna try again?

Yeah, Sony is always supporting new IP.

White Knight Chronicles, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Uncharted, MAG, Agent, EyePet, inFAMOUS, Folklore, LocoRoco, Patapon, Fat Princess, PixelJunk series and many more.

Edit: I forgot to mention Heavy Rain.......don't hurt me.

Somebody please tell this to Nintendo. I'm not trying to troll but I feel like they haven't made any great games new IP's since the N64 days. I mean sure theres Wii Sports and some other decent ones but its mostly Mario and Zelda sequels. Back in the N64 days they had shit like Pokemon Stadium, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, etc. Some of the best games ever.

I also forgot LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm and Resistance.....

Funny that out of your three examples, only one was a new IP.

I'm also sure Nintendo feels that catering to 20 million+ with their new IPs is far better than catering to whatever limiting standards you feel make a great game. However, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Nintendo has been looking to drop the expanded audience and the new IPs they enjoy, to sell less copies of their games in exchange for internet forum acceptance.

I don't want to derail the thread so the only reply I'll give yoy is that those numbers are quite pathetic. Compare these most "successful" titles to new IP on other platforms and see for yourself. And what's the most important is that these IPs you listed didn't drive the platform sales (with probably Infamous being exception of a small scale - not sure). So, you say Suny understands gamers require new IP and fresh experience? Well, OK... But Sony obviosuly fails to deliver such "refreshment" to gamers demands, as the sales indicates. And that's not OK, especially in conjunction with exec's quote  given.

Funny how Uncharted 2 drove platform sales, then. Excluding the Wii games, And besides Gears of War and Assassin's Creed, what new IP this gen drove strong sales?

If that's your logic, then Left 4 Dead bombed. And Lost Odyssey. And Viva Pinata. And Mass Effect. The list goes on. But clearly you just don't understand sales at all.
