Forums - Sony - Sony: “New IP is the lifeblood of the industry.”

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Europe’s Senior Vice President, Michael Denny, believes that original games are hugely important in today’s games industry.

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Liverpool this morning, Denny said: “We must support new IP creation to survive as an industry. Consumers crave new things. If we want to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive marketplace, we need to promote new ideas.”

“New IP truly is the lifeblood of the industry,” he continued.

Denny cited Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain, which we previewed yesterday, as an example of a high-quality, innovative idea on Sony’s publishing schedule.

In his talk about what Sony looks for when working with independent development houses, Denny said: “We try not to be too prescriptive. Clearly, issuing guidelines is a good thing, but we always want to leave room for disruptive titles.”

He said that the key factors in a successful pitch to the company are a good idea, a good knowledge of business and a strong team delivering the content.

But “there’s one key ingredient” to ultimate success, he said, “and that’s passion.”

I agree.

Gamers need fresh new games every so often.
New IP's are needed, just so games/genres can evolve.

Actions speak louder than words. The industry as a whole keeps going back to the same well, time and time again. Not like one can blame them. With production costs so high, it's hard to put money behind a totally new IP.

Well Sony's studios are making quite some new IP's though....The problem is that fans are complaining they want sequels.

seems sony it's only the undestand.

Well, Sony KEEPS doing that though. They've put money behind new IP after new IP. Thank goodness for it too, it's what made the 32-Bit gen so great.

It's an obvious statement though. Clearly we need new IPs because that's how we get our sequels that sell oodles. Sony's main issue is not being able to extend their new IPs into large scale franchises. When it comes down to it, it's the game that ends in "5" that is going to sustain them, and recently I've noticed Sony has a bit of a balancing issue between new IPs and established franchises, and particularly the timing of them.

It's this attitude that made the PSX great.

I think Sony's first and second parties have done an excellent job with creating new IP's, and it's a major reason why I support them more than any other console right now. I'm getting tired of the refuse that Nintendo and Microsoft keep spewing out, but the PS3 has repeatedly exposed me to brand new games.

Without the PS3, gaming would feel empty to me (outside of all the cheap, "micro" games that get released, like World of Goo, Braid, etc).

I'll admit that it'd be nice to get a fourth Crash game by Naughty Dog, or another Jet Moto, but at some point in time I know I'd get bored with it.

Currently playing: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, NBA2k11, Metal Gear Solid, Picross 3d

yea, it is pretty much this generation Sony is stepping up the creation of New IP's, I myself have been very happy with all three companies this year. Microsoft has also put forth effort into new IP's, Nintendo has also so to me it has been a win.. win.. for this generation so far

I AM BOLO

100% lover "nothing else matter's" after that...

ps:

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

EA have released a number of new quality IPs as well (Dead Space, Mirror's Edge). Also, Ubisoft brought Assassin's Creed, which has strong potential.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!
