I don\\\\\\\'t understand what some of the problems with the PS3 are, lots of companies are making great games and making them better on the PS3 but other companies can\\\\\\\'t even get anything right. I don\\\\\\\'t think the unreal engine is to blame, UT3 is going to look the same on the PS3 as a $1500 PC rig. With all the maps and everything, and only being pushed back 2months at the very most.
Are developers just spending there time on the wrong stuff or just trying to force a game out in a unreasonable time?
It\\\\\\\'s a question of staffing. Usually when a studio leases an engine they expect it to work or work by a certain date (like Silicon Knights did) and when the engine isn\\\\\\\'t fully delivered or delivered it can greatly throw things off. One of the pluses of leasing an engine rather than building your own is you don\\\\\\\'t have to have a large team to build the core engine.
Studios that build their own engine (Epic for example) or studios that still keep an engine team around have to pay more to build or lease the engine, but they can also deal with lateness or little quircks. That is why epic can make UT3 look it does because it\\\\\\\'s their engine that they know inside and out and they can do what they want with it. Other studios that use the Unreal Engine and have a large engine team can also modify the engine quicker and better than those studios that have next to no engine team.
One way isn\\\\\\\'t exactly better than the other because just leasing the engine with a small core tech team means you save a lot of money and time, but it is much harder to deal with engine problems. Having your own engine or a large team to support the leased engine requires a large amount of money and time, but you make better use of the engine quicker. It really just depends on the studio and what they can and want to do.
