Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

If I were to read that not knowing any particular contextual info, I'd think this is something about motion capture, rendering, tweening and tweaking of skeletal animations. Not about the game interface.

I thought that as well, but "tracking" is a key word here. Most would not use that word for pre-rendered or motion captured stuff.
