Great thread CGI
Sega do not get as much love or respect on this site as they deserve.
In terms of the sheer amount of games developed and published Sega are second to none.
On to the consoles............. I'll name my top 3 consoles and my top 3 games for each of those consoles.
1. Sega Megadrive.
Top 3 games on this excellent machine
1. Streets Of Rage 2 (Greatest side scrolling beat em up of all time and even though its now SEVENTEEN years old it makes all other Side scrolling beat em ups apart from Guardian Heroes look silly, Unique moves sets for ALL playable characters, memorable boss fights against the likes of the mighty Shiva and Mr. X, great level design and for me the best soundtrack of the 16 bit era courtesy of music LEGEND Yuzo Koshiro)
2. Sonic and Knuckles (Absolutely beautiful looking game, the level design is amazing, the music is exceptional and back in the day when you couldn't save whenever you liked it was a real challenege to complete the game with all 7 chaos emeralds in tact)
3. Revenge Of Shinobi (An absolute classic platforming/Adventure game, this game was the REAL DEAL, challenging bosses, challenging levels to navigate and the music in the game is from one of the most respected music composers in gaming history...... Yuzo Koshiro, Nuff said...!!!!!!!)
2. Sega Dreamcast
Top 3 games for the most underrated console of all time
1. Shenmue (What can i say about this game that i already haven't before? answer? i can't, Shenmue for me is simply the Greatest game ever made........!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Forget GTA III and its open world structure, THIS is the best open world game ever made, This game had everything, a compelling story about Love and Revenge, Hundreds on NPC's to interact with, Mini games like darts and arm wrestling, Fruit machines, mini collectables of all you fave Sega characters, QTE events that were simply STUNNING to be a part of or watch, One on one battles Virtua fighter style, Hell, Theres even a 2 vs 70 battle where Ryo and Gui Zhang really take it to the mad angels, you can visit arcades and play classic Sega games like outrun, the list goes on and on, IGN scored this game 97%, thats a fantastic review, but in my opinion even IGN's review is 3% short of what this game truly deserves, a modern day masterpeice)
2. Virtua Tennis (Yes, a sports game, yes its tennis but OH BOY was this good back in the day, hey, you dont have to take my word for it, see Virtua tennis's scores for the dreamcast on metacritic for yourself, i don't need to go in to too much detail here, basically all i need to say is that Virtua tennis wipes the floor with the competition......... Smash court Tennis, Top spin ect don't even come close the the quality and pure addictivness of Virtua tennis)
3. Soul Calibur (Simply amazing fighting game, pushed the dreamcast to its limits graphically, theres been 3 more soul caliburs since, but none have come close to the near PERFECTION that is the origional soul calibur)
3. Sega Saturn
Top 3 games for this amazing console
1. Guardian Heores (Simply the Greatest Side scrolling beat em up/RPG of all time, Because i find it impossible to seperate Streets of Rage 2 and Guardian Heores im labelling GH as a side scroller/RPG and SOR 2 as just a side scroller, that whay they are both at the very top of their own genres, Guardian Heros has TONNES of playable character, multiple paths to take therefore giving the game massive longevity and simply put this game ALONE should be reason enough for ANYONE to own a Sega saturn)
2. Fighters Megamix (Soul calibur is Great, but for me this is the best beat em up out there, the cream of the crop from virtua fighter vs the cream of the crop from fighting vipers in what can only be described as fighting carnage, with special guest appearances by Janet from Virtua cop and the Hornet car from daytona USA this fighting game had it all, simply FANTASTIC)
3 Sega Rally (Sure, there were only 4 racing tracks, sure, that meant that longevity was a bit of an issue, but when it came to Sega rally your driving had to be almost PERFECT in order to get the most out of the game, this game demanded perfection and because i loved it so much, every time i played it i tried to play it as perfectly as i could, simply a brillaint racing game)
So there you have it, my top 3 erm....... top 3's lol
Theres many games that i haven't mentioned here, but one things for sure, the VAST mojority of my fave EVER games were delevoped and created by Sega and that is why for me............ Sega is the greatest gaming company of all time.
One last thing Sega, you know what to do................ Give Yu Suzuki a big fat cheque and let him get on with making SHENMUE III
