Forums - Sony - PS3's next price cut

If the PS3 dropped to $199, what do you think will happen? I think it will definitely have 2nd place secured because there are still so many people holding back on the $299 price tag. The Wii and 360 already have cheaper models than the PS3 and if you don't have a 360 or Wii by now and you want either of these then I don't know what you are waiting for.

So what do you think?

What do I think? Let the $299 price have its effect fully first! A price drop to $199 isn't coming any time soon, though.

@blackops

yeah you are right the Wii and 360 will stop selling tomorrow....

U miss my point, I'm just saying they are reaching their peak so there is diminishing marginal utility setting in. They won't stop selling thats for sure but they won't make that much huge impact like they have been doing before. Especially the 360

I think people mistake consumers for waiting the PS3 to drop with consumers waiting for consoles price to drop altogether. You can't show in sales that anyone who didn't have a next-gen console was holding out for a PS3, bro. It only showed the ones holding out had more time to weigh pros, cons, and wants out of the market that gave them their best answer at that certain time which, looking at sales, was PS3 and now Wii with it's price drop.

Well, a lotta people who had either or both the 360 and Wii probably want a PS3 but it's not their priority right now because most games are multiplat so if they got a 360 they ll buy games for that but when the price drops, then they might consider getting a ps3

@koewnicki
The next gen might have started and a lotta people would have bought the next xbox or the new Wii which will slow down the sales of both of them but Sony might extend the PS3's life because there are still a lotta untapped potentials in it unlike the PS2

Maybe but the point I'm driving is with your thread post.  It's not about everyone waiting for the PS3 to drop in price is basically what I'm saying, when you consider what the general consumers want then you have price to worry about.  Let's say PS3 drops to $199 but won't have demand for it in comparison to Natal (doubtful but just saying) bundled with 360, the consumer will decide what they want more not the price (in most cases).  I'm basically targeting the saying "Consumer buying PS3 for the price dropping $299, imagine if........", whether you disagree or agree with the first few sentences just bear in mind there's more variables to be had when considering hardware sales.

I agree with you. You have some valid points about that but we also do not know if MS is launching a new xbox next year because it seemed like Steve Ballmer slipped up but retracted his statement so let's keep our fingers crossed. Whatever the case, I'm anxious to see what next year is gonna look like because MS is really depending on NATAL

@kowenicki

Never said there were no good games coming out for the 360. NATAL is gonna start getting bundled with the xbox next year. Do you think they are gonna sell the bundle for less than $199. I predict $299

It won't happen soon. Expect a X360 price drop before then. Sony *might* do it if Natal is very successfull.

@ Kowenicki
You know MS acessories are overpriced so I'll still stick to my $299. I believe that's how much they'll bundle it for just to see how well it sells and might drop the price eventually.

Sony is not adjusting the price for a LONG time (IMO), but I have been wrong before and will be wrong in the future as well. They are doing extremely well at the current price point and this holiday should be great for them. I don't see a $199 PS3 for 2-3 years, if ever.

As for the other 2 console makers. The 360 is still selling very well and has an amazing 2010 line-up, so I expect equally great things from them.

Nintendo returned to the top quickly after a single $50 price-cut and has some great games coming as well.

Sony's soon released financial quarter and profits/non-profits will help shed some light on future price adjustments.
