Forums - Microsoft - Rumor: Supreme Commander coming to Xbox 360!

Another top-tier RTS might be coming consoleside, and it's a biggie (and not owned by EA too!)

http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/22-10-2007-6725.html

The developer behind PC RTS Supreme Commander has confessed that he is working on a console version of the game.

In an interview with Pro-G, Chris Taylor, founder of Gas Powered Games and the man behind Dungeon Siege, classic PC RTS Total Annihilation and its recent spiritual successor Supreme Commander, said that the Xbox 360 would be the most likely console destination for the game because "it's the platform of choice for moving stuff from the PC".

Speaking on the issue of controls with RTS games on consoles, Taylor said: "I use the football analogy. The first RTS game was the kick and then we had to take the ball a few more yards down the field every iteration. We're getting closer and closer to that touchdown. We may be a few more iterations of the UI and interface before we get there."

When asked whether Gas Powered Games would be the developer to score that touchdown with Supreme Commander, Taylor revealed that a console version of the game was in development.

He said: "I hope so. That's our goal. Especially not to talk too much here because you've almost made me confess that we're working on it... no actually you have. That's good. I like that. This is a secret I want to share."

Pro-G caught up with Taylor after a presentation of his new PC action RPG Space Siege, scheduled for release "in the middle of next year". Taylor revealed that Space Siege is more likely to come out on Xbox 360 before the PS3 because of added complexity with Sony's console and a smaller install base compared with Microsoft's next-gen offering.

When asked whether he would prefer to bring the game to Xbox 360 over PS3, he said: "Yeah likely. It's a great platform. If you look at pure development economics, it's the platform of choice for moving stuff from the PC. You can get stuff over there economically, very quickly."

Commenting on the PS3, Taylor added: "The hardware is more complex, but it's not out of the question. It's just more time. As the install base grows and as that market starts to become more understandable to us, like we understand what kind of player is on that platform because we have more data, then it becomes logical that a game like Space Siege would move through the 360, the PS3, heck and probably the Mac."

So that's yet another PC RTS that looks like it's coming to the Xbox 360. I guess if Crysis comes over to the darkside, then there won't be any reasons to own a PC for gaming anymore :-

That now gives us:

World in Conflict (better than SC, fyi)

Universe @ War

Endwar

Supreme Commander

Halo Wars

....All coming out shortly, and all or most exclusive to the X360. I guess there's another genre the Xbox 360 now has a virtual lock on quality titles.

I wouldnt necessarily say it has a lock. As a big time RTS fan(one of my favorite genres), playing an RTS on the Xbox has in no way the tight control and fast decision making capabilities as on a PC. Sorry, unless they come out with a specialized mouse/keyboard like controller for RTS games on X360, it will never be able to compete with PC on these sort of games. Like ive played ports (C&C3 and while not total port, LOTR: Battle for Middle earth, i played first one on PC, sequal on xbox360) and to me it felt the games required dumbdowned strategies on Xbox as you couldnt select and command as quickly and specifically units in the heat of battle as on a PC.

And so you know, im not trying to bash xbox in anyway here, just RTS on a console literally is not able to do what RTS on a PC allows.

So you've never played Kingdom Under Fire for the Xbox then, correct?

Yes, ive owned both of them.  That one worked well, but its not an RTS.  Yes, its a strategy game, and has similar principles to a RTS, but its not a real RTS.  RT stands for Real time, referencing to that of a Real Time Satelite Image, the idea of controlling the game while viewing from above.  I dont think there is anyone that can confuse KoF with the likes of C&C or Warcraft.

I own Supreme Commander for the pc, I would say its an ok title. The real draw is the multi player combat which from what I have experienced is a lag slow down fest. If they can fix those issues and add all the new stuff from the expansion it might be worth buying. Keyboard Mouse *yawn* You can almost do the same with a controller expect your negative tons of hot keys.

Well, Console RTS's are definitely getting better now that Devs are figuring out better ways to make it work with a controller. I think if they are ever able to get voice commands working well, it'd be just as good as M+KB.

Mouse + Keyboard is the ultimate control scheme for RTS and FPS games. No arguing that. The X360 control scheme's for FPS and RTS games are passable at the best. But 1 on 1 Mouse + KB will whip the Joypad.

On the other hand the Wiimote + Nunchuck combination is great for FPS titles we need a true cross platform title to duke it out between the 2 control schemes.
RTS games would also be great on the Wii with the precise aiming of the Wiimote.

Heeeeyyyy!!!! <Snap>

So how is Supreme Commander? I have the PC version (it came free with my video card), but I haven't actually tried it out, haha.

I haven't really played any RTS games since Starcraft/Brood War(a few years ago). I'm looking at picked up Starcraft 2 when it comes out though.

More games coming out for the 360 is always a good thing though :)

starcraft: "I and every PS3 fanboy alive are waiting for Versus more than FFXIII.
Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

Skeeuk: "playstation 3 is the ultimate in gaming acceleration"

Supreme Commander is the best RTS to date.

go go supreme commander!

It also says it could come for the PS3 sometime later .

Morgyn - have you played World in Conflict? As far as I've heard, it seems that WiC was the higher reviewed title (about 4% higher).
