Forums - PC - Windows 7...what will it mean for gamers?

I really wouldn't call it 'hax' as much as download dx10 for XP and install it.

Microsoft had plans to take advantage of certain abilities Vista had for dx10, but didn't end up doing it. Therefore there was no reason for dx10 not to officially support XP. I have it installed on my WinXP machine.

My mistake then.

You can't run DX10 on XP. Not even with 'hax'. It might appear to download and install but your games will not be using it.

In some tests, games actually perform WORSE on Windows 7 than Vista. In others, they're either flat or slightly better. So...7 won't do anything good for PC gaming. It'll just stay the way it is as a best case scenario.

Yet none of them count.

Windows 7 requires a lot less resources and is more optimized. The tests done, are done on early builds of 7, even the release is a early build, till we see SP1, we can't really gauge 7 well. Vista in SP2 is very optimized for gaming now, when it came out we'd see drops of nearly 60% for most games in FPS between XP, and that changed slowly first few months, updates etc. SP1 came out and vista became good, SP2 came out and it was now basically equal to XP in gaming performance, 5 FPS difference, which is understandable due to resources vista eats. 7 right now performs the same as Vista, though uses much less resources. 7 is not developed for DX9, which the tests were under, it is older hardware, 7 is meant to take advantage of 11 fully. It does perform just as well as vista with dx9 and a little worse then XP, but once SP1 and SP2 comes out, it will either be the same as XP, or even higher. XP performs so well because it's so optimized over the years, don't believe me install windows xp release, upgrade to SP1, upgrade to SP2, then to SP3, you will see FPS jumps in games by like 5FPS at a time.

There are people who reverse engineered DX10 and built the dependance libaries for XP. They also offer software emulation so if hardware does not support DX10.

I run DXdiag and it says it's running DX10.  Are you sure it's not actually running DX10?

Doesn't really matter.
Crysis which is one of best looking DX10 games can look just as good with a little bit of config tweaking under dx9 version.

Also there's no game which seriously requires DX10

I'm looking forward to it...more so, because Vista wasn't a very good OS. I didn't install the Beta for 7, since I didn't want to risk a dual install on my already fragile desktop. I'm SO ready to blow this thing away and try something new!

The people who 'reverse-engineered it' didn't get very far - they closed down after the preview release which was proof-of-concept only. I'm confident that no matter what you have, it is not running DX10.

Unless you can find people who've done it and proved it, in which case please post a link.

Well...one clear thing Windows 7 will do is to seriously boost the revenue and profits for EDD...
