How about free online play? It worked for StarCraft for 11 years and counting, and that game still gets free updates, and is still better than every online game that has ever cost money.

No one is talking about one specific game here. Comparing Starcraft to the entire Xbox Live infrastructure is a bit off the mark, don't you think?

StarCraft > XBox Live.

You also can make a friends list and have cross-game chat between StarCraft, WarCraft, and Diablo.  Only thing missing is a gamerscore, but I guess that's what costs $50.

There are a lot of things you are not seeing when comparing PC starcraft online to XBL.

1. Cheating - there are hacks for any pc game including starcraft. XBL is a controlled enviroment.

2. Ranking up/matchmaking - sure free online could work for RTS games but in most FPS games your rank determines your opponent. For example, if XBL was free, any 5 star general would be able to create a new account every day and ass rape people that are new to Halo 3.

3. Its easy to create an online chat and party system for games published by 1 company, but XBL works with all games from all companies.

4. XBL offers a lot more than online play and voice chat with its 50 dollar price...

For now. But how much is it going to cost when StarCraft 2 and Battlenet 2.0 come out?

I don't know, but I'm really scared.  If it's still free, it will just keep getting better and better.  If it costs a dime, it's gonna hurt real bad.
