I think voting should be controlled in some ways - I am not voting for games that I do not own (or have played) and that should be fairly clear and set out. Also to make things fair, the top 5 and bottom 5 votes could be disallowed, akin to what happens in olympic sports such as diving and skating.

If I did do that it would need to be the top 2 and bottom 2 and I would have to extend the minimum amount of scores for each game to 10-15 scores.

I'm not sure about doing that though....

@Yo_John

Actually you have a good system going on. Even if you discount, let's say the top 3 and bottom 3, you will still have some deviations to the actual score. Plus, that will only make people votes even lower, because that way, even if you discard them, there will be a global deviation of the average score due to the aggregation effect it would have on the rest of the votes for people voting lower to avoid being in the Top 3.

Good point.  I will keep with the same system i'm going with now.

No I don't own a ps3, but I have been borrowing LBP for nearly a year. LBP is probably the game that had me most attached to my brother's PS3. I even made a few levels and published them.

It's a solid platformer on it's own, with an excellent stream of new content for free. The level editor is simple and works well for most things.

That's fair. Even with scores deviating from the normal standart, since you have many people in VGC voting in your ranking game, you end up with the higher scores mellowing out the effect of the lower ones.
I just hope people are more objective when giving their score. That's why I hate scoring a game, I think it's a responsability that most people neglect and just go with whatever they feel like. A game has to be tested to the parameters that it wants to accomplish and that previous games like itself have accomplished, afterwards, if you have any personal views about it you should add them, but not before the factual analysis of the game.
At least that's my view on the whole ranking thing.

Removing top and bottom scores is also used in statistics - these are referred to as outliers as they kind of give a false impression on the results. It's not something that I invented. Also most people vote sensibly so I don't think that the system would lead to polarization. As an aside - what would the scores have been with the removal of top and bottom scores for the games voted so far?

In any case, voting for the games is fun, so if you prefer to keep the system fair enough.

@Fufinu

You're considering the removal of standart deviations above or below the 95% gaussian curve pattern in statistics right? Well that only applies when studying the T of student and the sigma of the curve, because to actually consider the gaussian pattern acurate, you still have to take in account the small percentage of results above or below the 95% standart, because if not, the bell shape of the curve will be invalid.

I wouldn't change the approach or calculation - too much trouble for what is just a bit of fun in the end.  I'd just note the lowest/highest score so people can draw there own conclusions.

So say:

Popular Game 1 - 89%  Lowest score 4 and highest score 10

Popular Game 2 - 93% Lowest score 6 and highest score 10

There's no point trying to weed out gushing scores for someone's favourite game no matter what, or bashing scores because they hate that title and all it stands for - just give some visibility if that may be going on.

Personally, if we see a game with no 10s and nothing below 7 I'll be impressed as it must be a) genuinely good and b) no-one who likes it is just slapping down a 10.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
