Probably just a random lockup.
I had about 10 from fallout 3 and my 60 gigger is still purring along nicely (the last time I checked it was anyway *touches wood*
not that wood, you pervert!

Proud Sony Rear Admiral
My PS3 froze on different instances, even while playing LBP. I just switch it off from the button and then usually turn it on there and then. Don't know if that is the wrong way to go.
Is Uncharted 2 pushing your PS3 hard? Probably.
Did your machine lock up while it was being pushed hard? I completely believe your account of what happened, so yes.
Did your machine lock up because there is a memory leak, bug, etc. in Uncharted 2 or a system library call that Uncharted 2 uses? Possibly.
Does your machine locking up while being pushed hard mean that the PS3 will be destroyed? It's theoretically possible, but unlikely. I know of about 3 instances over the past 30 years where software being developed by the team I was on actually fried hardware, and that was always due to some sort of glitch in the way the hardware was designed. It's just very rare for this scenario to exist.
So, while your machine locking up while it was being pushed hard seemed to indicate that the machine was being overstressed, this is not very probable... likely the two effects are separate and not related to each other. Welcome to the world of coincidence.
John is over 30. John has brown hair. All men over 30 have brown hair... BZZZTTT!

Don't worry happened to me before nothing to be worried about.

I'd be more worried about the amount of time I lost on the game... there have been times where I've lost hours and hours of play... that's when I put the game up for a few months
don't worry. this happened to me twice already, i just turned it back on, no problems, i think its just the game making the ps3 work hard. LOL.

| Steroid said: Oh no! I was playing the train level in Uncharted 2 and my PS3 froze! I had to hold the power button down and it went beep beep beep. I haven't turned it back on I want it to cool off. But basicly I think there might be some merit to ND's claims that U2 is nearly maxing out the PS3. Like only a few minutes after I turned the game on the fans on my system started spinning, and it's cold as hell in my house! Also I've been playing a LOT of Demon's Souls so basicly I'm scared! This would be the worst thing that could happen!
Pray for my poor 40 gig (his name is Sparkie so you know who to tell God to look out for). |
Dude, this happened heaps of times on my 40gb when playing assassins creed of all games, a game that hardly pushes the PS3. I'd say the double beep is just the PS3's way of saying that the Hyperviser (the Sony OS thats always operating in the background, behind the XMB) has had to reset the PS3 because something in the PS3 has stopped responding, which usually occurs with buggy code. My PS3 has never really spun up the fan much but it is both well ventilated and a PS3 Phat (although that includes Australian summer).
I'd just say its probably a software glitch in U2, and has nothing to do with any imminent death of your PS3. Start that sucker back up and get back into kicking arse U2.
i hear it happens alot on the older original ps3; i have the MSG 80g bundle and rarely get game lock ups during long sessions of play.
*Update*
Whew! Sparkie is fine.
I almost had a meltdown, I don't know what I would do if I didn't have teh cell in my life!
