Forums - Sony - Next Generation of Playstation

With falling hardware costs because of the economy, it is relatively cheap to produce a powerful console. Just overload the PS4 with tons of ram since it's cheap so games can have a lot more going on in it without it overloading, especially huge RPG games. Imagine a Fallout 3 type game with no loading points and mostly everything rendered in just one load at the beginning.

They can use Blu-ray and an upgraded C3LL with a really beefy graphics card and probably still launch it at $400.

They could stick with the entry-level and premium models scheme, but this time the entry-level must cost less than $400. It could have smaller HDD (250GB will be dirt cheap by them, it's already cheap now) and less USB ports, while the premium could have 2 sets of controllers, bigger HDD, more ports, useful gadgets, etc, but it must cost at most $500.

It never ceases to amaze me how much people take for granted the existence of a "next" Playstation. Also, anyone who says Sony has learned their lesson about pricing hasn't heard of the PSPGo.

Once again PSPgo is FAR from overprice if you compare it to the right things (ipod/zune...).

PS1 and PS2 both launched at 299

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Yeah but 299$ 14 years ago for a gaming console was surely almost as 599$ now.

Uh no. 299 then is still 299 now it's affordable and at an entry price. 600 was outrageous then and is outrageous now

Sony is in a fantastic position. They will reuse most of their tech.

Expect a slightly upgraded, smaller, and cheaper Cell Broadband engine, More ram, a bigger hard drive and a smaller, cheaper faster blu-ray drive.

The ps4 will certainly launch at 299$, with full motion control. blu-ray support, full digital distribution support, full 3d gaming support, and will rip competition apart.

299 is only "the same" psychologically. Inflation says that 299 in '94 (launch of PS1) would be 413 in '07 (the closest the calculator i found went).
