What about connecting via component? You could also try that if all else fails.

I don't quite know what you mean by "PS3 picks it up". When you connect your PS3 with a HDMI/DVI cable, the PS3 may not determine which resolutions are supported, so it may display every option.
If you are choosing 720p, the monitor goes black for 30 seconds, and then it switches back to 480p, that is because the PS3 is popping up a "confirm" screen and you aren't confirming it because you can't see it. Choose 1080i instead and see if that works.
More information would help us help you. I've used a HDMI/DVI cable to my monitor and never had a problem with it.

Finally got it to work. Had to manually change the audio settings to something and then everything worked fine. Thanks all!!

maybe his PS3 defaulted to sending audio aver HDMI. By the time it hit the converter then the TV, the audio signal could've caused problems therefore went back to safe mode display?
Dunno. Difficult to say when we dont know what audio settings were changed

Proud Sony Rear Admiral
Well I got the video to work but audio doesn't send over HDMI/DVI cables. So I had to connect the AV cables and tell the PS3 that the audio was coming through there. Wasn't so difficult just took a while to figure out.
Thanks everyone for your assistance :)
