Forums - Sales Discussion - Which console's big holiday titles will sell the most?

Don't forget the blu-ray driver effect on PS3. Many will consider that for holidays.

Updated the original post with sales for this week. The order remains PS3>360>Wii. The PS3 increased it's lead over both competitors even more this week. The Wii is really being carried by WiiFit Plus now which accounts for 66% of the top 5 total on the system. The PS3 is really helped by it's top two sellers, the only system to have two million plus sellers already. The 360 is the most consistent system with it's top 5, with it's 5th best selling title coming in at 230k, compared to ~144k for the PS3 and a measly 50k for the Wii.

@09tarheel: It's not really surprising to see the Wii being carried by Wii Fit Plus, together with NSMB it needs to carry the Wii at this contest. It should get a pretty decent boost next week from the release of Wii Fit Plus in Others but it will be playing catch up for most of the period (that is if it manages to catch up)

@koffie, I agree, I'm not surprised that Wii Fit Plus is dominating the other Wii software. Really I'm just surprised at how low the sales are for new games besides Wii Fit Plus and Mario and Sonic. The fact that the 4th and 5th best selling games on the wii are still in the 50k range is what is really surprising to me. I think those bottom two spots are the real liability for the Wii to win this contest, and that if it is going to catch up some third party games (maybe DJ Hero, Tony Hawk, Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles) are going to have to do better than expected.
Either way, I feel like this contest is shaping up to be pretty interesting.

It is not really surprising to me, because apart from the 2 already mentioned titles and Mario & Sonic nobody could mention any other title that should become a big seller.

Updated the chart in the original post with this week's data. The overall standings remain PS3>360>Wii, but for this weeks increases it was 360>PS3>Wii, thanks in large part do to a strong week from Forza for 360. The PS3 still has a commanding lead overall though, approaching 2 million over the Wii. The bottom 3 spots remain a real liability for the Wii, although DJ Hero might eventually at least put up respectable numbers. So which console do you think will benefit most from next weeks update? Has your opinion on the overall results changed since this thread has started?

I had been planning on posting a chart with the top 5 games on the platforms regardless or release date to make it more relevant to what the companies care about, but now I have decided what the companies really care about is total software sales, so I will also start posting the total software sales for the Oct-Dec period weekly.

Console Total software during holidays Percent of top 5 of total sales
Wii 9,647,363 24.90
PS3 8,910,371 46.52
Xbox 360 8,440,085 36.08

This shows that as you would expect being the market leader is in the lead with total software during the period, although not by that much so far. I thought it was very interesting to see the breakdowns for how much of total software sales, the top 5 titles released during Oct-Dec make up. So the PS3 is dominating the contest that this thread is looking at, but when you see that those 5 titles make up nearly 50% of it's total software sold during the period it is less surprising.

Note: I'm not including Wii Sports in the Wii software totals.

Shamelessly bumping my own thread (because nobody posted with this week’s update) to ask which games do you think will take the 4 and 5 spots on the Wii top 5 list? As I and others have mentioned multiple times in this thread, those 2 spots are the real vulnerability for the Wii in this contest, but still there should be a couple of games that at least put up some respectable numbers unlike the current two games. I think of the games left to be released the likely candidates are DJ Hero, Band Hero, Lego Rock Band, Need for Speed Nitro, Rabbids Go Home, Shaun White Snowboarding, Call of Duty Modern Warfare Reflex, Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles, and Tony Hawk Ride. I think pretty much all of these games will sell a similar amount by the end of the year, with around 300,000-500,000. But I’m going with Tony Hawk Ride and DJ Hero as taking the last two spots. What does everyone else think?
