Forums - Sony - Naughty Dog reveals Uncharted 2 graphics

Uncharted 2's Nathan Drake. All 80,000 polygons of him.

Just by viewing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves screens or trailers, the first thing you’ll notice are the incredible graphics. Naughty Dog was able to utilize the power of the Cell processor more than ever before, which allowed them to focus the graphics chip to certain aspects of the game.

In a video interview found in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Pal England, Lead Programmer at Naughty Dog, talked about the graphics of Uncharted 2. The main characters typically have eighty thousand polygons in them. Even more impressive, just using the graphics card, Naughty Dog was able to pump out two million triangles in every frame.

“Our characters they typically have eighty thousand polygons in you know, one character, like the main character. In total- what we try to push through to the graphics chip at one point two million triangles that we try to draw every frame. We do a lot using the cell processor.”

Naughty Dog really pushed the PS3 hard this time around and it shows. Every level in Uncharted 2 looks better than the previous. Look for a full review later this weekend.

Honestly, do JRPG makers even realize how hard it is to save the world? That shit is impossible!

The true power of the Cell has been revealed. Question is, how much better graphics can it pull off in the future?

I'm addicted to this beta. Its truly worth getting a ps3 just for this game...

Game is amazing.

Let me show you why they call me the velour fog. Hit it.

I met her in a club down in old Soho,

Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like coca cola,

C-o-l-a, cola.

She, walked up to me and she asked me to dance,

I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said;

Leela, L-e-e-l-a, Leela, Lee, Lee, Lee, Leela

Impossible to answer, we can only say the Cell can be pushed much further, there's a lot of room for optimisations regarding its 8 processors (and very flexible with regard to what the freed up CPU time could be used for). It's for example possible to generate more procedural synthesized assets or rely more on fast harddrive delivery of assets (as Uncharted 2 streams everything seamlessly from Blu-Ray), etc.

Naughty Dog already stated that they will be able to push Uncharted 3 much further from a technical perspective.

best game 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

graphic = the best
multiplayer = the best >>>>>>>>>>>> Halo 3, Gears of War 2, Metal Gear Online
singleplayer is awesome

the best RPG's are coming 2013 !!!! oh my god, this is perfect for RPG-GAMER = ) Ni No Kuni - 25 january, Time and Eternity, tales of xillia (PS3) and the maybe best game ever: metal gear solid ground zero

What Naughty Dog has accomplished is to make many other developer talents look shamefully unimpressive from a technical perspective as well as with regard to game design talent.

I think Uncharted 2 may finally lay the good old HD console system wars to rest and render many past technical discussions and wild claims obsolete and uncalled for. They show off what the Cell can do, they show off what Blu-Ray can do and they demonstrate how you can create a top notch epic game within a short timespan once you've got the fundamentals sorted out.

Remember people, while not trying to impinge on ND's work, they did have the help of the SONY ICE team!

Sony's Ice Team is made up predominantly of Naughty Dog programmers.
