Link, for one simple reason:

He saves the princess every time. Cloud just watches her die and then gets emo.

Link goes against a moron that always kidnaps Zelda and w8s for Link to rescue her. Cloud goes against a maniac that killed Cloud's "princess" infront of him before he could react, then smirked and left while Cloud was still in shock xD

...I would be emo-ish too :P

Yeah, but he can only do a limitied nuber of things per battle. He can't reequip materia whenever he wants to while fighting, the only thing that makes Materia so awesome is the group dynamic; the ability for each person to specialize in one necessary area per battle. Each person in the group has their own job and abilities and each contributes accordingly. Cloud can't equip all the materia at once. He has to rely on the rest of the group to get the job done.

What makes Link so much better than Cloud is that he can defeat Gannon and endless bad guys by himself. He doesn't need Tifa to heal him, or Barret to cast Knights of the Round because he has some other materia equiped. I mean imagine how pussy Link would be if he had to get Midna to use the hookshot because he was carrying the boomerang. Or if he had to get one of the Zoras to heal him because he was carrying the bombs.

Link runs solo, that automatically makes him the better hero.

Honestly, I think both Link and Cloud are kind of lame. Though, I like both of their respective series. I think I'd give the edge to Link, but that's only because I think Cloud is too busy repressing that he ever met or talked to Cait Sith to fight.

I always preferred the Star Trek vs. Star Wars vs. Robotech arguments.

"Fire the main gun!"

"Human equality is a contingent fact of history. Equality is not true by definition; it is neither an ethical principle (though equal treatment may be) nor a statement about norms of social action. It just worked out that way. A hundred different and plausible scenarios for human history would have yielded other results (and moral dilemmas of enormous magnitude). They didn't happen." - Stephen Jay Gould

Systems I currently own (in order of preference): PS2, SNES, Gamecube, Xbox 360, Genesis, Nintendo DS, PSX, XBOX, Wii, PS3,  Atari 5200, Turbo-Grafx 16, NES, Gameboy, Game Gear, 32X.

Link is way cooler but cloud would kick his ass..

btw A Zelda RPG is long over due.

I am WEEzY. You can suck my Nintendo loving BALLS!

Cloud can equip Heal/Summons/and black magic at a time...but you are making a turnbased-style gameplay vs. Zelda's gameplay...obviNously if you put it like that, ANYOE can beat Cloud xD

yea I am tired of ppl dissing out cloud for his emoness. you all no that you have doubts about yourself and believe you can't do things, so why diss out a video game character for being realistic. cloud went through life feeling out of place and like he was letting ppl down so of course he had inhibitions. then he grew from that and was able to bond w/ new friends and save the world. Link doesn't even talk so w/e.

I know I am taking this too seriously, but I don't care. cloud freaking owns so deal w/ it.

LOL

Oh, and this is a pole about being the "ultimate hero", so its only logical that people would rag on this character for the things that dont line up with a heroic ideal. After all, this isnt a "anti-hero who is cliched beyond belief" poll.

i should have put that in quotation marks. my point is he wasn't emo, but just like anybody else. i know what your're saying , however I am not one to be impressed by cliched heroes who don't have a life away from saving princesses. the fact that cloud came from obscurity to save a planet is more impressive that being a reincarnating elf who is oh so perfect.

Link is an archtype - keep in mind that thats not the same thing as being a cliche.

Cloud storyline isn't more impressive, its just stupid for the very reason you list. The fact that that happened is completely unrealistic, yet you applaud him for being "like us" and being beleivable. Not to mention that sort of single, unknown hero rises up to the challange is soo cliched in video games that its unbelievable (just look at every FF game or any other jrpg). Granted, this is the way most games are, and its the way Zelda is as well. However, you cant say cloud is better for essentially being like every other jrpg hero, just with a more interesting back story.

The point was, Cloud is never Solo through out the entire game. He always has someone else helping him fight.

^^^^ no, the first fight as soon as he got off of the train was by himself :)

I think Cloud is better than link Hero wise. Back in high school we learned a hero was a person that we could all relate to and I'm sure we can all relate to feeling lost or losing a friend or loved one or trying to find yourself... all things that cloud did... Plus, FFVII is a great game! :)

^^Against a handful of soldiers my mother could beat up.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions and yours are just as valid as mine.

A hero is an ideal, not always something you relate to on a deply personaly level, and sometimes someone you really cant relate to at all outside of a shared culture/nature
