Forums - Sony - Sony selling Cell chip fabrication line

To Toshiba, one of their partners in the venture. This just keeps getting a little weirder and weirder.

they realized that they didn't really need to OWN a factory to produce chips for themselves (Microsoft and Nintendo don't own the factories that produce chips for them)

if they can sell it for ~800 million, it will reduce some of the huge losses they've had over the past couple of years, which is good

Rumor becomes fact.

Dunno, it depends on how much it cost Sony to build and how much of a loss/profit they were taking on in the venture.

Without more details, this could be a good or bad thing for Sony. It's hard to say anything positive or negative about it with the little info we have.

Maybe nothing.

Sony is getting a wad of cash and likely lowering cost of production.  Whether they pass this on to the consumers is unknown.

It means that Toshiba, currently amidst a "who can kick the other in the shins the hardest" competition with Sony over HD-DVD and Blu-ray, will now be providing all Cell and RSX chips for the PS3.

Strange industry, indeed.

Does that mean we get to see other chips in the PS3 then?

Dunno, sounds desperate to me or am I wrong?

No, the chips will surely remain the same. This is part of the Sony CEO's plans to streamline the company. It's been happening for quite some time. He wants to rid the company of its non-essential assets.

They're heading down the road to pure play, I wonder it'll work for them.
