Well I agree that government is probably not the best way to help these people out however I have yet to see too much trust in people to help out their fellow man as well. They only help those when there is a sense of urgency which is of course perpetuated by the system. Need a natural disaster, high unemployment, terrorist attack, etc. to really rally most people into helping their common man. But people suffer due to bad circumstances on a daily basis and need that mass appeal to help like in special times but it doesn't happen.
So of course the problem is obviously at the root of the problem. One we need a people that is raised to care about it's common man not only when it is popular but when it is necessary and DESERVED... don't forget the last part. You don't help those who don't deserve it because that is a waste of effort. And second you have to hit the other root of the problem... why they are in need of help in the first place. What causes people to be poor? Is it simply unfortunate circumstances or does this go even further. Potentially a problem with our economic system, government protection of rights, or simply the moral backings of our society in general.
This is just another situation where you can't simply fix by saying more government or less government. That is a very narrow way to look at things. This problem stretches deeper than a silly government involvement or not argument. Government has a place in the protection of personal liberties and rights but that is not the only debate in this. Remember it still states in the constitution to promote the general welfare meaning the founders still thought the government played at least a small role in protecting the well-being of its people.
I still think the best way is private charity and contributions with government oversight and protection of personal liberties and rights to make sure everything is fair for every citizen but of course you have to have a society that values those virtues to begin with for it to work. Today's society... I don't think they do value that.
