Forums - PC - Linux fans: how good is WINE these days.

I am putting together a media center soon, from parts as I build a new PC.  Would like to play some games, but this is mostly a media box.  I am toying with using Linux and WINE for some Win programs (mostly games), but I know nothing about it.  Any thoughts?

Are you saying Linux fans need to get drunk to enjoy it?

I like wine... I don't know why anyone would shoose beer over it.

XD

Thanks, I too prefer wine over beer. A nice chianti is great with beans, and liver.

As linux user, wine is okay now and days they need to update it soon.
Cedego OS is better to use with wine or win operating programs but I'm good with my ubuntu.

Most torrent games wont work with wine, but a lot more games are starting to become compatible with Linux monthly.

I like wine and Linux in general because of a lot of the free mini-games eg Tron.

And the customizable interface in comparison to something like windows.

Final thoughts for now being if you really aren't comfortable with closed barriers of Windows and want something like Mac you might as well use linux they're both UNIX systems.

With all the little errors I have and end fixing I end up feeling better in myself and becoming more knowledgeable.
Like I've had Linux for maybe 2/3 months and I'd say I'm a C+ B- student in it it's not hard to learn and you'll be given many opportunities.

But to help answer your question further you'd have to go into detail by what you mean on toying and what specifically is confusing

Honestly, do JRPG makers even realize how hard it is to save the world? That shit is impossible!

Well, I have tinkered with WINE before, (this was several years ago, mind you) and the abstraction layer was just not as stable as I would like to see. Honestly, I couldn't get much to run with it.

I am basically wondering how well it works now - in general. I don't need to run torrent games. I would just like the option of running them (expecially Witcher).

I am not really a Mac person - as I enjoy building and tinkering with my computers, and Macs don't allow that flexibility. I am just examining the possibility of a MythTV based box.

Thanks for the advice!

Why don't you just use Windows?

Actually, I am considering Win7 or WinMCE too, I am just exploring possibilities.

WINE is decently good so long as you aren't looking to play the newest games. If you go to winehq.com there's an entire database of how well it will work with each application. The Witcher, for example, mostly works but there are a few issues with stuff like the life bar. The site tells all about the issues and can even give hints on how to fix them if there is a fix.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

Cool, thanks!
