Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii 10 mln. or PS3 5 mln. in Japan. Who first?

At the end of this gen of gaming consoles, I predict he ps3 to be ahead of the 360.

This is a PSP game, not a PS3 game.

You're right, it's PSP/360, not PS3/360!

@Wii_Master: plus 245k for this week.

what do you mean by pluss 245K...I mean for whcih console.

What just about everyone is talking about on the site today is famitsu reporting that FFXIII sold over 1.5 million first week and over 245k for PS3 hardware.  We don't know Wii numbers yet; they just give these early reports when something big happens which is why we know PS3 numbers for the week.  But when you questioned NeoMatrix's figure of "650k left" for PS3 (saying that it actually had 900k) you seemed to have missed the news.

So to sum up: the 245k figure is for PS3 for the week ended Dec 20 and NeoMatrix's 650k figure is how far the PS3 has to go after the week ended Dec 20, based on famitsu figures.

Don't see how the PS3 line-up is any better - for the Japan market anyway. Also EA Grand slam tennis would be for the Wii and not for PS3. Noticed that quite a few of the PS3 games were TBC too. So i can see at least a few of them slipping until later on in the year.

No, it's the "gem" version, GST Wii already came out in Japan last summer.  Natal version likely won't ship until fall then.

And yeah, I expect some of the tba games to slip.

If we reduce the lists down to just announced games with a confirmed date and are likely to sell 100k+...

Wii

  • 01.14.10 Biohazard: The DarkSide Chronicles (Capcom) 100k+

PlayStation 3

  • 01.28.10 End of Eternity (Sega) 100k+
  • 02.04.10 Star Ocean: The Last Hope International (Square Enix) 200k+
  • 02.18.10 Biohazard 5: Alternative Edition (Capcom) 100k+
  • 02.18.10 Dante's Inferno: Shinkyoku Jigoku-Hen (EA) 100+
  • 03.18.10 Ryu ga Gotoku 4: Densetsu o Tsugumono (Sega) 400k+
  • 03.25.10 Quantum Theory (Koei Tecmo) 100+

Xbox 360

  • lol

i think these two should also hit 100+ first week.. hopefully PS3 audience will be big n varied enough to like these titles.

I doubt either comes close, even lifetime.  Bayonetta and MW2 each just passed 100k 1st week, and they're both dramatically more appealing for the Japanese market.

Also, no EA game has ever come in over 100k 1st week iirc, on any platform.

You may be very right.. But i thought Dante's Inferno is a copy of God Of War n DMC both of which do reasonably well in Japan. and with the lower price of PS3 n definitely 30% increase in PS3 base in Japan from DMC launch n with good marketing i think it can do well.

for Quantum Theory it can be a sleeper hit like Demon Soul, so 100k first week is a little too much for it, but with 40 - 50k opening n some good legs (granted the game is good) it may do 100k in a month time..

But i will definitely be keeping an eye on these two games as a new IP..

I just think Dante's looks wholly unappealing for the Japanese market versus something like DMC, Bayonetta or even Ninja Gaiden.  God of War tanked in Japan too btw, none of the games ever even passed 50k.  And that's on PS2/PSP.

Quantum Theory is going to tank hard too imo.  The small western market in Japan (who buys up stuff like Gears, Halo, MW, etc) will avoid it alongside the Japanese mainstream and the Otaku hardcore.

And weren't we right to doubt ioi? I respect him as an analyst but just about every prediction of his so far has been wrong. PS3 dropping below 20k in a few weeks. No big games aside Final Fantasy XIII compared to Wii's lineup, Wii beating PS3 every week after the price drop. All of those are inaccurate predictions. He may win this bet but he certainly wasn't right about everything, I doubt anyone in this thread is. I'm gonna go ahead and say once again that the two of you are wrong about FFXIII as well.

Are you also saying MC and Famitsu are wrong, because they are the ones who said it wouldn't sell 2 million in Japan lifetime

So uh, why is this guy banned? After two months of telling me that I'm a fool for saying FFXIII would debut near 1.5 million and Famitsu can't possibly be wrong about the FFXIII LTD being 1.5 million, he's banned the week FFXIII releases? This thread just got a lot less fun.

The guy was banned for trolling New Super Mario Bros Wii (first day sales) and also being alt for someone who was perma-banned.

Odd, I always thought he was a supporter of that game, and considering it's great sales I don't see why he'd bash the numbers. Oh well...

I think this is bad info.  He was banned for trolling but I doubt it was for saying anything negative about NSMBW.  He said something would "flop badly" apparently.  Also, pretty sure the alt for someone who was perma-banned part is wrong as that would result in perma-ban itself, I think.  I think Acevil is mixing up Avinash and ZorroX/Crazzy.

Anyway, Avinash's ban ends tomorrow so you should see him again soon.  Unless he choked on his crow.

Hey, pure genius! Maybe Avinash and Crazzy are the same person with split personality! Didn't he just admit something with his nickname? Oh, well, maybe the autopsy will tell us something...

If you base yourself on historical data Wii should do around 210k this week.
However this is going to depend on whether the PS3 push this week is going to happen at the expense of the Wii or not.
What I mean by this is last year for the same week 200k console were sold, this week it could be as high as 450k...

I don't think this means all that much, but it actually won't be too far off - mainly because handhelds were doing much better last year. The DSi was a recent release then, so it was pulling well over 200k, while the PSP had FF Dissidia launching. This year the handhelds will be around 150k down.

This time around it's just the home consoles getting more love. I prefer that, anyway...

Some more release dates:

03/04 BioShock2 (Xbox360/PS3)
03/11 Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Xbox360/PS3)
03/11 Red Seeds Profile (Xbox360/PS3)
03/25 Head said Lovely Idol Chaos Chu ☆ Chu! (Xbox360)
03/25 Army of Two: The 40th Day (Xbox360/PS3)
03/xx Fist of the North Star Musou (Xbox360/PS3)
03/xx God of War Collection (PS3)
03/xx Nobunaga's Ambition Online (Xbox360/PS3)
03/xx Pachipara 15 (PS3)
04/01 Super Street Fighter IV (Xbox360/PS3)

Add on the PS3: Super Street Fighter 4, First of the North Star Musou, Troy Musou, Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Sengoku Musou Online (maube), Ar Tonelico 3 (maybe), Trinity Zill'Oll (maybe), Last Rebellion (maybe).

On the Wii add: Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: US (maybe).

Of course pending on the release dates, but all of this are probably sure 100k+ sellers.

PS3 has Q1 in the bag for sure, the only notable release for the Wii is RE:DSC, and we know how sequels tend to underperform in Japan for the Wii. Not much more left for the rest of the year after Q1.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

I was just talking about games with set dates.  I agree Hokuto Musou and GT5 are sure bets, the rest aren't though and Musou Online, GOW3, TatsuCap and Last Rebellion probably have no hope of it.   Troy Musou and AT3 are longshots too imo.

Wii's looking better after Q1 than PS3 though imo.  At least with what's been announced, PS3 doesn't have anything as big as Galaxy 2 or Zelda.  Versus could be, but then it might not make it until after 2010 (like DQX).

GoW3 will obviously NOT sell 100k or more, the rest probably won't, but have some chances. Troy Musou will and AT3 may, based on the history on the franchise, but there's a big possibility it won't.

After Q1 Wii has SMG2, Wii Vitality, Sengoku Basara 3 (maybe) and probably nothing else that could be coming in 2010 as a sure 100k seller. Zelda I think will be released in 2011, but we will see.

After Q1 PS3 has Metal Gear Solid Rising, FFXIV, Sengoku Basara 3, Lost Planet 2 and Dead Rising 2 (maybe) as sure 100k sellers.

Versus is probably 2011, but could be coming in 2010, due to Nomura already announcing 2 new games really soon. DQX is probably 2012.

Edit: GOW3 will not sell even 20k (?), lol, how dumb was I. Didnt know the series was so disliked there.
