Forums - General - The meaning of life

Oh and the actual reason for life?

The "To Live" reason is a good enough one.

If there is a reason the big man upstairs hasn't told us it. So... the only way to live is to live as if there isn't a reason and to just do whatever you want and find your own meaning.

My reason, living seems a lot better then dieing. Life is interesting.

The two main theories after life appear to be "Happy place" or "Nothing." well or extreme pain forever.

Both of which seem boring, so i'd rather gather all the interesting moments i can here before i go. Cause they'll be helpful should I ever get bored....

and well if i'm wrong and it ends up nothing somehow. I'd like to avoid nothing as much as long as i can. Wouldn't you?

Well its your choice in life what type of situation do you like.

I'm kind of hedonistic, I believe in living for pleasure. However unlike traditional hedonism I don't think instantaneous pleasure is the best kind, rather the kind found in relationships and the like is.

So yeah, the reason for life is to enjoy yourself.

Edit: There isn't actually a 'meaning' to life though, we came here by chance and the universe is indifferent to our existence.

...is to live?

I couldn't have said it better myself.

probably could have, ya know... a lot less self-doubt and a lot more definite-ness. take away the ? and make it all bold-type, authoritative-lookin...

hmm.

but thank you. me and you can go live while the rest of the guys here spend the rest of their lives trying to figure out why we're here...

lol... this is a good mental mindset.  I'll explain further.

The question has many facets in that it touches philosophy, theology, metaphysics, which in turn gives substance to what equates to being a human being.

Are we all just like the dung beetle who has a genetic makeup to eat shiet?  Are we meant to just rut and procreate our species like a rabbit?

I like the mindset to go out there and live, but to be different from the rest of the animal kingdom, life has to have meaning.  The only answer I can give to the topic question is you make your own answers by living life and answering that question for yourself.  There are no absolute answers because there is no definitive question.  At least thats my basic take and opinion on the universal question of life.

I game.  You game.  We game.

I'm a videogamer, not a fanboy, but have a special place for Nintendo.

Well necessities of survival and instinctual knowledge such as reproduction and protection is of course one answer. But I guess it depends how you look at it. I wouldn't say that's the meaning of life because that isn't meaning but simply actually living.

But of course it could be there is no meaning to life. But I still think it is quite arrogant of humans to think they themselves have meaning in such a grand universe where they are only one speck in it. So maybe living is the meaning of life but your meaning would be how you live it. And if how you live is only through basic necessities (primal needs) then so be it. I'd like to think given the human's capability of rational reasoning that I can make so much more of my own life and give it my own meaning.

But if you are looking for a base meaning of life that is equal for all humans, then maybe primal needs is that. Or you could even say that "happiness", as Aristotle would put it, being the ultimate goal of man. But this is of course a deep philosophical question that I obviously can't answer in one post nor ever answer. But that is the way I look at it. I don't know what the meaning of life is for humans or for myself but I know I have the capability to give my life meaning.

mmmm i think it is be happy and make other people happy:), trying to live the life and enjoy it, get the most of it.

There is no meaning. We're all tools that will be stuck in a downward spiral until our society eventually collapses upon itself, destroying mankind and ending the Cenozoic era.

Cheery, I know.

It was pretty good, but Holy Grail will always be my favourite. Cleese is just awesome in that one.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy
