Forums - Sony - PS3 >5M units sold and ahead of Wii/360 last week ("Others")

Good for Sony, now they are losing even more per unit than they ... did ... before ... Uh, this is good news, right? Oh yeah, it's good news for the PS3 gamers because it increases the size of the PS3 users base, which may make it more attractive to T-P developers, and good news for those of us waiting for the PS3 to come down to a price we can obtain it at.

Good work, Sony. Hopefully the system "settles" at a good number.

it was to be expected since this was europe and others 1st price cut.. i dont think people realize that yet..

"Good stuff" ? it barely outsold the Wii on sony's best market and needed multiple price cuts to do it...

Besides, it will drop off very quick IMO

I'd wait a few weeks before you start celebrating, also it only outsold the Wii in "others" and a few random places in Europe-- not that huge of a milestone.

Now it finally breaking 5 million, that's noteworthy.

At least it kicks the people on these forums that said the PS3 wont sell 5 million before Black Friday in the nuts.

Yeah, that's a dumb prediction even before we had the price drop....

Anyway, it looks like it had a very solid Week 1.  I expect the increase it settles at to be much better than the one from the first "price drop."

Well done Sony!

However, much like the launch of the Slim, this won't be the permanent sales/week of the system.

Also, Wii sales in Europe were up ~20%. Did an important game launch there last week?

Edit: Nvm, it linked me to the Oct. 07 totals for some reason.

Good job Sony.  It destroyed the 360 in all regions except the UK, and even there it still outsold the 360 but 1k.

From what I read it only "won" in other and spain. Still, a sales boost is a sales boost. Although I wouldn't reach for the Kleenex just yet.

Interesting to say the least. However caution is merited. We have seen similar spikes in the past. Give it a few weeks, and we will know something of how permanent the effect will be. Unfortunately these numbers are not altogether dominant. Microsoft is doing better then Nintendo and Sony in these markets combined. This is mind blowing to say the least. A couple months ago nobody would dare to speculate about that possibility.

This is definitely cause for some celebration, but it is a somber one. I would expect a much larger increase in sales. Given the remarkable price reduction, and fear motivated purchasing. Sony should have sold over a hundred thousand. Thats what not having a killer game lineup might do a company.

Speaking of lineup anyone else get the feeling that is hurting Nintendo. Microsoft laid down a spanking on the Wii in North America, and held up well in the other regions. The Wii is just not being its old dominant self over the past few weeks. Nothing has really changed except for a modest price reduction by Microsoft, and a few really good games. So could we be getting back to what matters the games.

Folks it looks like Microsoft just might give Nintendo a hard time this holiday season, and Sony thanks to their lower prices might do some damage also. Thats what Nintendo gets for resting on their laurels. Nice to see the situation shake up a bit.
