I'm not sure that the Halo series needs Master Chief as much as it once did. Bungie has fleshed out quite a bit of the Halo universe and many Halo fans glom onto anything that further expands their understanding of that universe.
Halo Wars is an example... I didn't find the main character nearly as compelling as Master Chief, but I still had fun exploring new aspects of the Halo world.
