Somehow I think the extra 3 million+ in sales they would get from having the game on the DS in addition to Wii will cover the dev costs just fine. Capcom manages to do it with the Monster Hunter series without too much hassle.

NSMB DS and NSMB Wii look very similar too, so does Animal Crossing DS to Wii, I could see something similar to that done for DQX.

I think this is the best case for the Wii/Nintendo, because they very easily could yank the game entirely off the Wii. They have done it before to Nintendo (Dragon Quest VII) when Nintendo's console struggled in Japan.

DQVII waqsn't 'yanked' from the Nintendo 64.  It was changed to the PlayStation because it was originally planned to be put on the Nintendo 64 DD in 1996, which Nintendo stopped supporting soon after.  Yuji Horii then transfered all development to Playstation (the most popular system at the time).  Yuji Horii has always stated he will make Dragon Quest for the most popular system at the time.  Hence why DQVIII stayed on a Sony system last gen and DQIX switched over to a Nintendo Platform again this gen.

There's a bit more to this story than that (read: it's why Yamauchi barred Squaresoft from publishing on the Game Boy for a long time).

And yes, Horii has said Dragon Quest goes to the most popular system.

The problem is, the Wii is floundering in Japan right now, I don't even think its the third most popular system in Japan right now. Most of the Wii's sales came in its first year and it's been declining year to year ever since in Japan.

It is not at all like the Famicom, Super Famicom, Playstation, or Playstation 2 -- the other consoles that Enix put DQ on. If the rule of thumb is the most popular platform gets the next Dragon Quest, then its going to be the DS. The DS is the true successor to the PS2, not the Wii.

Because your view is very short sighted.

The Wii still holds a five million unit lead over the PS3 which isn't getting close to changing any time soon.  Considering Nintendo havent even had an official price drop.  Even at the rate the PS3 is selling, its not going to pass the Wii in overall sales.

So basically square are going to the the home console with the current biggest userbase, Wii.  Just like they did with DS.

Are you from some alternate reality? The Wii is "floundering"? It's wrecking the competition and only being beaten by the the handhelds. Your obsession with the absolute need to have DQX on the DS makes no sense from any logical standpoint.

"Just in case"? Just in case what? Just in case it continues to sell gangbusters in Japan like its predecessors? Just because you don't like the Wii doesn't mean that Japan isn't going to flip out over the next DQ.

It's pretty obvious Horii went with DS because he was at a crossroad. The next gen was just starting and instead of taking a gamble with a platform that would tank he went with the DS (as SE learned the hard way with FF13). DQX is just a return to form.

Exactly.  They're making the game for the most popular console.  Its not really more than that.  The major factor is that they're making the next game for a console, and the Wii is the best console to appeal to Japanese consumers.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I think they might port it. Look at the projected sales for Tales of Vesperia in Japan alone for it's first week, 230,000. It took the X360 7 weeks to do that with sales in Japan and America. I think Sony is showing they can sell RPG's on their console.

lolololololol, 230k isn't impressive when DQX is going to sell over 3 million guarateed. That doesn't even make sense.

"Infinitely smaller franchise sold somewhat decently after being to a ported to a console that actually has an install base, so maybe DQX will be ported to that console from the one that's currently dominating Japan."
