^^^That's strange. Are you using the same 360 that you bought the software on? Same hard drive? If not, go to Xbox.com and switch your license information to the new console. It's what I did.

You are doing something wrong then. I can play all my arcade titles whether I am connected to Live or not.

Where do these people come from?
Maybe 50$/yr isn't overpriced, although 0$/yr is a lot better, but anyway it's fair to take it into account to calculate consoles' TCO.
I'd have one question too: not having an XBox360, I'm curious, is it possible to play online with it without paying Live fees, for example using games producers services not involving MS and offered for free to games buyers, free third party hosting services financed in a different way than fees, or hosting games on one of the players' PC, like it happens for PC games?

It's because it was a harddrive from a different 360, I was under the impression they were modular so that you could plug them into different systems :/

There is probably some tunneling software on the PC where you can simulate a LAN game. This was a work around you could do for the original XBox. I imagine someone has done it for the 360 as well.

Yes, I knew about the workarounds, I wished to know whether it's possible for SW houses to offer free online gaming services alternative to Live and to users to privately host games online for groups of friends without workarounds.
If you don't care about Gamerscore, and just want online play, just make a new profile every month. They'll give you a free month. It doesn't work forever, though.
^^
This, however, makes XB360 online less appealing than competing platforms' ones for people not wishing to give MS a regular fee, independently from the fact that the $50 amount is considered overpriced or not (I guess most people considering it excessive actually dont't really consider it so, but, consciously or not, hate to have to pay MS any fee excepted console, games and other items price, i.e. they are fine for one-off payments for whatever they want to buy, but they are very uncomfortable about being milked forever by Redmond).

LOL...to make people feel better...don't get the annual membership...pay monthly or 3-months to make it seem like a fee-for service arrangement.
