No Halo Natal "until it makes sense" - Microsoft

Halo 3: ODST producer Alex Cutting says flagship franchise won't incorporate Xbox 360 motion sensor anytime soon, but feels tech can work with shooters.

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer revealed that the developers of the Xbox 360's biggest shooters--Epic Games (Gears of War) and Bungie (Halo 3)--were already experimenting with Project Natal. Now, another MGS employee is warning the public not to expect the latter franchise to immediately incorporate the camera-based motion-sensing technology when it launches next year.

"A lot of people are interested in what Natal's presence in Halo's going to be," Halo 3: ODST producer Alex Cutting told Videogamer.com. "We are committing to only doing it when it makes sense. We are not going to produce a gimmicky feature that just takes advantage of motion controls when it doesn't feel right."

However, sticking to the Microsoft company line, Cutting also said that Natal could be used for virtually every game genre. "I think FPS, there's a lot to be said for dual stick control," he elaborated. "But, you know, before dual sticks came around and before Halo: Combat Evolved established it on a console, people were pretty doubtful about that, that it could ever move from keyboard and mouse. So we've seen it already form one control scheme to another. I'm not going to bet against Natal. It's a powerful technology."

Cutting's comments are similar to those made in July by Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski. Speaking with British magazine Develop, the industry wunderkind said that "it's likely that the classic control interface is what Epic will be working on in the foreseeable future." He went on to say that a hybrid of camera-based motion-sensing and traditional controls could be compelling. Ironically, Microsoft rival Sony is preparing to launch such a system next spring that combines the PlayStation Eye camera and controls with light-emitting diodes.

straight from the horses mouth, fps' on natal are gimmicky. xD

It's pretty easy to see the analog between keyboard/mouse and dual sticks. Unless they plan on doing a sort of dual stick + motion control (dodge, duck, etc) its gonna be hard without all FPS being on rails.

A warrior keeps death on the mind from the moment of their first breath to the moment of their last.

THANK YOU GOD!

Now I don't have to worry about Natal turning Halo: Reach (The biggest and VERY possibly the best Halo game EVER) into a piece of shit.

Bring on September 2010!

i can understand how shooters work with the wii remote and nunchuck. there is still a controller to hit buttons on. im not sure how an fps on natal would work. im sure its possible but im betting the first games that try to use it will not turn out well. of course that comes with using new control schemes anyway. personally i like the wii controller scheme more than the others because i believe it to be more flexible. project natal will have a lot of freedom due to it being controller free, but it will come with its own problems. i havent had a very good look at the ps3 motion controller so i dont now how different it really is. if there are still buttons and the like on it it will be fine.

my first impression too

Obvious.

I'm so glad about this. But I would like to see a combination of Natal and a GoW lancer shaped contoller, with an analog stick on the front where your hand goes to move your character, and buttons under your fingers for weapon switches and what not. I'd pay 70 bucks for it. Combine that with head tracking and the ablity to "toss" a grenade with your hand or make hand signals in rainbow six type of games. It could work.

now that would be totally kick ass. i dont even like shooters that much and i would totally get that if it were avaible. aslong as it worked with more than one game or eventually got more games to use it. i know some people do not like periphireals, but i do a lot. it gives the games that use them a more engaging feel.

They should bring an arcade light gun shooter to the console (Konami published it I believe) where you have to actually lean and duck to dodge bullets while you take down your enemies.
