Forums - Gaming - Blu-ray for gaming?

The Wii and the 360 are already being pirated. thier are mod chips for the Wii called WiiKey and the 360 also has a mod chip. both thoes mod chips allow for playing Burned DVD games. Only the PS3 has yet to be pirated in any way yet. Which is a surprise considering how Badly the PSP is being pirated. Hell even the DS is being pirated eaily with a R4 mod SD stick.

Nintendo Wii is in there, ranked just above the PS3, this with the help of US women. According to this survey US men prefer the PS3, women prefer the Nintendo Wii.

opps didnt see that, but why is it people dont realize video cams and digital cams are one in the same now. 360 would have probably been #10 then.

No, it would be an Apple Laptop.

The XBox 360 and Wii have very similar mods and their approach is pretty simple; it (essentially) tells the system that a burned DVD is an official game disc so when you burn the image the signed data is maintained and it boots up normally.

The combination of the small userbase, expensive format (Blu-Ray) and massive disc image sizes (25GB) makes this approach worthless on the PS3; the number of people who own an PS3, are willing to spend $500+ on a Blu-Ray burner, are willing to spend $20 per disc, and have the bandwith to download 25GB game is very small.

In any case I think it's very positive sign the PS3 outranks the XBox 360 even in the States (according to the wishlist research), as that's by far the XBox 360's (and original XBox') strongest market.

I don't think it's bad if the Wii outsells the PS3 this holiday season, like I said I consider it more to be like a dedicated toy. I wouldn't have bought my kid sister a PS3 instead of a Nintendo Wii, maybe I will do so a couple of years down the road with a cheaper slimline product. I think many others view these devices the way as we do.

My girlfriend loves the PS3 as she knows what it can do (it will take some time for consumers to figure out how multi-functional the PS3 can be, especially in combination with a TV Tuner option in the future, I may even get a PSP for streaming despite that we both love and own a Nintendo DS as well), we have tons of photos stored on there which we show to friends and family who visit us, I also have many 80s music video classics and MP3s on there that we listen to when we for example play a game of Risk together with our friends.

The Gamecube's optical format was just Panasonic's abandoned alternative to DVD ... Although it could read standard DVDs the challenge of reading the discs prevented piracy for years

I often use this and UMD as examples to point out Blu-Ray disc is here to stay. Often it was argued before the PS3's release that Blu-Ray would fail due to HD DVD kicking its arse. Now we of course know that's not even true by a long shot, but even if HD DVD would have won the movie format war with the PS3, Blu-Ray disc's future is ensured for many years to come (Sony is also one of the biggest movie studios, so movie content even in worst case scenarios is IMO pretty much ensured as well).

Sony and Microsoft will never adopt the format owned by their competitor. Why give your opponent a share of your profits? Makes no sense.

HD DVD is pretty much Toshiba's format.

The Blu-Ray format isn't really owned by Sony.

Toshiba does not have a games console, hence it is not the competition.

And even if Sony doesn't own blu-ray in whole, you know damn well they have a large stake in it, and would certainly get a cut of any device that used it.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

US holiday wishlist for 2007, according to Solutions Research Group (SRG) for Digital Life America:

4) Desktop computer
5) Car GPS system
6) New Cell phone
7) Video Camera
8) Nintendo Wii
9) PS3
10) Blu-Ray or HD DVD player

3 important success factors within the US top 10 wishlist for 2007, a good sign.

Blu-ray's value for gaming is only that it can store more on a disc. Both NextGen DVD formats do this but Blu-ray can do more which is fine.

I predict that when Microsoft and Nintendo go NextGen DVD it will be a multi-format player that does both Blu-ray and HD DVD. Will this make Sony richer? Yes...

But, it will also make Sony get a different player that can do both formats which none of their blu-ray players can do today. Sony will continue to get format royaltes, but they will probably buy a multi-format player from one of the multi-format player vendors in the future.

Also, in 3-5 years I can see more and more games being distributed digitally and not through media. You can see it already with the success of digital downloads of games on all three consoles. It will only keep improving. As well, movies and tv shows are becoming more and more popular in digital distribution. There will always be media distribution, but it's use will become rarer and rarer as time goes forward.
