Forums - Gaming - I figured out why it is so hard for a sequel to outperform a classic game

what do u mean it has to beat the memories of the original?

Anything played/watched/read through the eyes of when you were a child are always better than current.

Nostalgia.

When you first played Ocarina of Time or FF7, you were completely blown away. as years go on you remember how amazing those games were and when a new game comes out, you hope it makes you feel the same way, but it's impossible to do that.

I saw a Rol thread, and I came in expecting to be amused. Sadly, I was not.

Excellent. Stuff like that is why I click on your threads.

why the "it makes perfect sense"? Is this supposed to be sarcasm?

The real reason it's hard is because it has to meet the expectations that the previous games built up. Also, it's hard to know what your audience expects.

Here is another one, in case you missed it. Definitely one of my best in a while, so it's worth checking out.

Yes, I managed to catch that one. Caused quite the hullabaloo.

Sometimes games add more features, but there is less focus on the additions.

The originals didn't have as much, but what they did have, they did right, and attained great focus.

Playing the first time a game in a series will always bring you a fresh feeling a second game can never achieve. No matter how hard i try to get into Super Metroid i will like Prime more, no matter how hard I try to point out the improvements of Prime 3 i will pick Prime 1 every time above it.

NOW it can happen that you completely loose your memories of a game. For example i cannot see me playing Mario on the NES, but i did! That's why Sunshine was like a new world to me.  Let 5-8 years in between playing of two games of a great franchise and you will have a blast of an experience.
