"It's just a fact that the U.S has a much higher % of its population using the internet than the rest of the world, including europe, japan, asia, etc. The implication is that if not that many people are using the internet, then they don't need ethernet cords. Sorry."

This is the general population. The gamer subset would be a much higher figure.

Internet use penetration (% of population)

Sweden 75.6%
Australia 71.9%
US 69.7%
Japan 67.1%
UK 62.3%

Source: http://www.internetworldstats.com/top25.htm

Swedish internet users: ~6.8m

Australian internet users: ~14.7m

Japanese internet users: ~85.5m

UK internet users: ~37.9m

Combined 1,2,4, & 5 users: ~144.9m

United States internet users:  ~209.9m

Just putting things in perspective. The US, while in third place, still has roughly 45% more internet users than the entirety of #1, 2, 4, & 5 combined.

And what do absolute values matter for here, exactly? Besides, those statistics are for the general population, not for gamers (which is what matters here).

If you're buying a PS3, then you likely have high speed internet unless its not available in your region.

Exactly.  Who pays $500 for a video game console if they can't even afford high speed internet?

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

Sony fans?

...

Kidding.  ^_^

On-topic:  Nice breakdown of the SKUs by region.

Japan getting the best deals.  Check.
NA is slowly gettig screwed over.  Check.
The rest getting screwed from the start.   Check.

Yep, all seems normal.

What proof do you have that purchasers of $800 consoles in South Africa is lacking internet connectivity? My bet is on that they do have internet.

its been said that there will be a $399 PS3 in the US by March 2008. I think the 80GB is going to have a price drop when the 60GB is completely sold out. My local EB is out of 60GB PS3s and wont be receiving anymore.

Oh so now the $399 PS3 will be releasing on March 2008. I thought you said its coming out this holiday season in the U.S.?

It's a pretty safe bet that the $399 40 GB model is about to be launched in the US...

BTW, isn't the 45 days FCC secrecy period on the new model about to end?

EDIT - just checked, it ends on the 19th. But it could probably get extended if Sony requests so...

I think it would be nice to include VAT rates in your diagram.

For example, a 40 GB PS3 costs 399 Euro in Belgium which includes 21% government tax (84 Euro).
