Forums - Gaming - SEGA's not making a new console! What's wrong with you!?

Listen. I liked-- No, I loved the Dreamcast too. And I would have loved to have SEGA keep supporting it until the beginning of the current (7th) generation of consoles. I don't think I got anywhere near as much enjoyment from a console as I did the Dreamcast.

That said, you have to know that SEGA was never a very healthy company to begin with. They had never managed to surpass their success with the Genesis which was short lived. They, on a number of occassions, put out many failed and unpopular systems/add-ons. They were always making far less profit compared to their competitors.

The truth is, that SEGA died when the Dreamcast died. Fundamentally, they are a differen't company now and given the current reccession (of which similar conditions in japan helped get them in the tight situation they were in with the Dreamcast) there is very little likelyhood of anyone jumping into this industry let alone a company that mainly relies on it's relationships with existing console makers to stay in business.

The only way I can imagine them changing back into a hardware maker is if 1st) Sony and Microsoft leave the market and 2nd) a change in company ownership and leadership takes place in Sega. Like maybe CSK buy's them back from Sammy or David Rosen and/or Hayao Nakayama buy's up all the companies shares. But failing that it's very very very veryveryvery unlikely they'll just up and say: "Sorry Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft but we're competitors again. Everyone take a gander at our new console 'Dreamcast 2: Dream Harder' "

Unfortunally Sega will never come back to the hardware market with a new console. I also loved Dreamcast and still play some games these days. If you compare a game like virtua tennis or soul calibur from dreamcast to its latest versions on ps3/ 360 there is not a major diference between them, the gameplay is the same, the graphics are a little better.

Games like virtua tennis1 and 2, jet set radio future, shenmue 1 and 2, soul calibur,  crazy taxi, ferrari f355, headhunter and many more are still actual dispate being released about 10 years ago. Dreamcast had online, 480p, control motion but no sucess.

Fantastic console, but ignored by most players.

Hudson did it before. They made games for the NES, and competed with the Super NES. It's not entirely unforeseen.

That said, i agree with your underlying point.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
