If you have previously noticed a significant difference on your display between 480i and 480p output, then it may indeed be useful to have the PS3's upscaled output, which supports resolutions all the way up to 1080p for displays that support it.

Well, I can't promise that it will solve your problem, but based on what you've said it certainly may improve the situation. If only there were some way to test it before purchasing... renting a system maybe? I suppose that could be kind of expensive too.

I'm here in ireland. I have already posted some comments critising ps3 and their price point. We have the euro and the ps3 40gb is 400 euro with no games as of yet while the 360 is 350 with two games. And there is a couple of points

The PS3 does not come with HDMI cables (which I think is a discrace when it is intended to be played on a HDTV. No one ever mentions this but i think it is relevent, they cost about 40 euros.

The 360 does not come with a hddvd player thing, while the ps3 comes with a blue ray. So that is certainly a point for the ps3.

The two games that the 360 comes with save you about 120 euro on buying games as well which is a plus for the 360.

So in summary, it seems to me anyway, if you want something to watch HD movies on the ps3 is the way to go. But if it is about games the 360 in terms of library and price, does seem to be the way to go at least at the moment.

On the point of trying to push consoles. the shops here are trying to push ps3 like mad. I think that they get a bigger mark up or something. But the wii seems to be the console that everybody has on their lips and is talking about. I have a wii and will probably get a 360 to play grand theft auto early next year. (I'll be a wii60 head :0)

Well funny is I still have a PAL PS2 with a few games. The PS2 which is dead is my Japanese version with which I have over 60 games. When I was checking the progressive scan compatible list on the Internet I noticed Jak III has the 576i option for Pal games. I've tested it with the normal cable and with component cable and wow... a major difference already between these two "without" a progressive scan. At first the letters are hazy...Here let me show it to you:

From the 10 Pal games I have left this is the only one which supports it, the rest are all in 480i and ugly. The same with my JP PS2 games with only a few supporting the 480p :(

So BC with upscale upgrades nonsense or not to have based on my TV? If no nonsense... who says BC is NOT important?!

Maybe you guys should create a thread for this upscale problem. It may help others?

Geez, 40 euros? There must be somewhere they can be found cheaper. I got my HDMI cables for about $14 CDN. I do agree that it is ridiculous that the PS3 doesn't include one, though, nor even a component cable.

Well what I meant to ask is if it is nonsense to have a PS3 with BC plus Upscale Upgrades, considering these pictures I've taken. But it seems like for me its a must to have BC then... Therefore I said... who says BC is not important? As in my case... it sure hell is then!

So on topic no 40GB for me.

Sony really needs to state why it doesnt have BC. And it's understandable. They removed the GS which stopped it's ability so they have to rewrite all their software. I think BC will return.. eventually.
