How important has it really become for them now that it has become a profitable venture?

Considering Halo 3 has over a million unique players a day. It's very possible there are a couple million people paying for Gold accounts.

As I've mentioned, Live services generated a billion dollars of revenue for MS in the first 5 years. Its also growing faster.

Infinity Ward Reported that a total of13 million  Unique Users have played CoD4  Online Multiplayer Mode on Xbox 360 Alone...

Also a game like COD4 must get passed around a lot via used sales, rentals, or even piracy. Charging for online play at least allows MS to get some money out these people.

They have had very very little profit. I think last year was the first profitable year for the XBOX franchise. this year they made about 170million total, the same as a single game could potentially make.

Nintendo on the other hand, made 5.5billion USD this year.
Sony in the negative a couple hundred million, 400 i think.

You are using numbers for the entire division.

yes ofcourse...the number exeeds the total sales cross platform..but 13 million Gold users would be required anyway..so your figure was low balled highly...

The 360 started making a profit in 2007 coincidentally when Halo 3 was released. Anyhow, I think Live profits are kept separate. I read Live generated 1 billion dollars of revenue in the first five years. It's growing at a much more rapid pace as well so it'll probably generate a couple billion more for the life of the 360.

For the record, a single game generating $170 million has to be incredibly rare. Some developers have a hard enough time breaking even.

What party was that at?
