Just to let everyone know I have phoned sony and they will give me a brand new 60 gig for £128 (odd number)

Now i just need to magically make £128 appear

Are you sure they said brand new? They gave me a refurb when my first PS3's disc drive failed. It doesn't really make a difference though, either way you'll have a working PS3 soon.

i suppose you could even transfer your HDD to a new different PS3 anyway.

that won't work unfortunately

each PS3 encrypts it's HDD with a unique key to only be usable from that same unit.

You can transfer the drive over, but ALL the info will be gone as the new PS3 will need to format the disk with its own encryption.

Sucks really.

I just traded in my 60GB for a slim. Originals have been breaking left and right. Sorry about your loss. $150 to repair.

(I figured...$160 trade-in value of 60GB and $300 for slim meant $140 out of pocket. Beats $150 for any future repair.)

I haven't heard this, but I won't claim to know everything... do you have any links to support this?  If this is true, I wonder if Sony might end up offering an extended warranty on the 60 GB units if someone can produce solid stats on the problem.  It worked for 360 owners.
