Forums - Gaming - Which one feels more overused:Mario or Final Fantasy?

I just realized that there has been 3 major final fantasy just about every generation

NES - 1, 2, 3
SNES - 4, 5, 6
PS - 7, 8, 9
PS2 - 10, 11 (not on PS2, but still during that generation) and 12

'over-use' seems to imply that they have used it more than normal. I would say this is not the case. The one game franchise that I use to characterize "over-use" is Pokemon.

Mario is overused, however, always welcome.

Final Fantasy has lots of games (Tactics,Crystal,Dissidia etc) and I'm not sure how much Mario has..

Final Fantasy has lots of extra stuff (Movies, figures, potions(LOL).

But I think unlike Final Fantasy, Marios aren't bringin anything new to series for past 10 years.

I feel Mario is more overused.

I have played about all Final Fantasy games from 8 and about all Marios from Yoshis Island (Well played Galaxy 20 minutes and got sick of it).

Holy crap I haven't seen this much fail in a while!

  • Super Mario Bros. only made the platformer genre based on one simple idea: jumping is fun.
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 added an entire new way of thinking to the platformer, Super Mario World made it better, and games would blatantly rip them both off for years to come.
  • Mario 64 is only responsible for the 3D cameras and movement we have today.
  • Super Mario Kart is just one of the best pure fun racers around.
  • The Paper Mario series is one of the most loveable RPG series ever.

But what about the last 10 years?

  • Well Luigi's Mansion was a new take on the series.
  • New Super Mario Bros. brought us back to the great games of back in the day in such a huge way it's still on the top seller charts.
  • Super Mario Galaxy brought an entire new spin on things.
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee is about the most complete game ever made.

So what has the Final Fantasy series brought us?

  • Final Fantasy was a great RPG for the NES.
  • Final Fantasy IV improved upon what the previous three games started.
  • Final Fantasy VI gave us one of the best RPG's ever made.
  • Final Fantasy VII brought an entire new generation to the RPG genre.
  • Final Fantasy VIII tried to follow the same formula as FFVII and pretty much failed (but still sold so don't quote me sales).

So what has the Final Fantasy series brought us in the last 10 years?

  • FFIX tried to go back to its routes and brought us a good game.
  • SE must have though FFIX was a fluke and decided to go back to the FFVII formula and brought us a bad game with FFX.  So bad that apparently people love killing the main character over and over and over again.
  • FFXI went a completely new direction with online and while it was succesful, most FF fans look down upon it.
  • FFVIII use to easily hold the title worst main FF game but then XII came along and blew even Mystic Quest out of the water.
  • FFX-2, do I really need to say anything?
  • Endless FFVII remakes.

So yeah, in the last 10 years SE has been trying to milk FFVII for every penny they can get and they will continue to do so for another 10 years.  Hell, even their new game, FFXIII, main character is described as Cloud but a chick.

What has Mario done in the last 10 years?  New IP's, return to classics, incredible things like Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door, and brand new things like Super Mario Galaxy.

I can't wait until people realize the FF series died long ago.

Mario has been played in every single way imaginable. Babies, sports, paint, party games, rpg, sidescroller, etc etc. FF doesn't hold a candle to the amount of mario games there are.

Yeah, but just about every new games tries to exploit Cloud and/or Sephiroth in whatever way possible.

This isn't the same as Mario or a Mario character being in every Mario game since those are Mario games.  Final Fantasy isn't called Final Fantasy VII: XII: This Time Cloud is a Whiny Woman, it's Final Fantasy XII.

Twesterm sense.... tingling!

Eh.... I don't guess it's really an argument worth having

I still don't see either of them as being overplayed, though

Almost everything you said about Final Fantasy is subjective. Just because you didn't like Final Fantasy VIII, X and XII doesn't mean everyone did. Both critics and sales say otherwise.

Idk but not final fantasy, they are always something new.

Luigis Mansion is Luigis Mansion.

New Super Mario Bros was same stuff as Mario on Nes, expect Mario could go giant.

Can't say about Galaxy.

Super Smash Bros Meelee is Super Smash Bros Meelee. You could call it Pokemon spinoff.

Every Final Fantasy has brought us great story, great graphics, great gameplay, memorable moments. In each game there has been diffrent battlesystem (spheres, materia etc).
