Half the thing is just a cooling system....

Guess they could have made it the size of the PS2 Slim, but chose not to in an effort to keep the thing cool. Perhaps quality won't be an issue with the Slim. My initial hesitation could be completely wrong.

I bet you we'll see some custom mods of a Slim PS3 Slim.
