Take it from a Canadian, there's no point in worrying about relations with the US. They will work with you when it suits their interests, and they will work against you when it suits their interests. One element in the US will gleefully sign a free trade agreement while another cheerfully undermines it to protect industries in his/her jurisdiction. They'll complain that you deserted an ally by refusing to invade Iraq even as your soldiers are dying in the toughest region of Afghanistan.
Sure, it's a good idea not to go out of your way to piss off America, but there's also no point in going out of your way to appease them. All the times you've helped them in the past go out the window if you get in the way of their interests today. For the United States, international relations is rarely anything other than pure realpolitik.
