Forums - Sony - PS3 Slim and 360 Elite at same $299 price makes 360 look primitive.

It's all about the game.

Microsoft really, really, REALLY needs to look in the mirror and change the way they do business. Their videogame division has lost them $5.5 billion over 9 years, and they are a marginal player in the console market, far behind the Sony-Nintendo power duo. The original Xbox was a solid machine with a fine roster of games. But the 360 has had serious quality problems and cannot match the PS3 on features (it's a long list: WiFi, BluRay, replaceable harddrive, free online). Nor has Microsoft built up a studio network comparable to Sony or Nintendo.

Ironically, the one feature Microsoft touts as its ace card -- XBL -- is a glaring testament to Microsoft's weakness. Because seamless online is not going to be a console monopoly for much longer. Every cellphone on the planet is going to get into the act. What ringtones were to the age of MP3s, downloadable games will be to tomorrow's mobiles.

I'm not saying any of this out of any hatred for Microsoft -- they're just another big company in a world of big companies. The issue, rather, is this: at its heart, Microsoft remains an OS monopoly wedded to a 1990s vision of desktop computing, and this design philosophy is the cause of most of their videogame woes. It's high time they admitted their mistakes, started over with a clean slate, and gave their game division the managerial autonomy to take some risks and reinvent itself. This will be good for videogaming, good for consumers, and good for Microsoft itself.

Its not a mirror its a window. Shane Kim is looking at Kaz Hurai.

@Thread:

The Xbox 360 has:

  • Xbox Live: Its not free vs paying, its play with your friends vs not play with your friends. The market adoption rate of 2:1 sees to it that most people who want to play online with friends have to play on an Xbox 360.
  • Xbox 360 games on demand + Netflix + instant movies + the best arcade software library. If you want to download, this is the best service, especially for the growing Ipod/download generation and the increased adoption of 20Mbit+ internet. Fully 1/3rd of all music in the U.S by revenue sold is online, only 40% of teens buy CDs.
  • The best library of multiplayer shooter titles, no questions asked. Halo + Gears + Left 4 Dead + smaller titles/Live hits.
  • The best back library of cheap titles and most of these play better than on the PS3 if applicable.
  • Positive margins on consoles sold, which gives them options for bundles etc.

Tease.

How is this a troll thread?  I plainly said I make no judgement on which games are better since that is purely subjective.  I'm simply stating that what you get from MS for $299 (DVD, wired internet connection, paid online, etc.) is less than what you get from Sony for $299 (Blu-ray, wi-fi, free online, etc.).  These are FACTS!

Keep this in mind when reading what I type...

I've been gaming longer than many of you have been alive.

the elite will take the cake this christmas.

but if you are smart buyer certainly slim it's a way over better deal.
especially if you already play 360 exclusives.

I will have to respectfully disagree about the Elite taking the cake this Christmas.  The lower PS3 price  & redesign + great exclusives (that MS can't touch, IMO) such as Uncharted 2 and GT5 + ever increasing demand for Blu-ray = big win for Sony this Christmas.

Microsoft should be extremely worried that their system is the same price now as the PS3.  Now that the price is a non-factor (who actually buys the 360 arcade unit?) for each company's fully featured console, the 360 looks absolutely primitive by comparison.  The PS3 plays Blu-ray...the 360 DVD.  PS3 has built in Wi-Fi...the 360 not.  The PS3 has free online...the 360 makes you pay.  The PS3 has a slot loading disc drive...the 360 an antiquated tray.  The PS3 is reliable...the 360 not so much.  I'm sure other people can think of more examples.  The point is that MS should not be looking to match the PS3's price.  They should be looking to beat it considering what each console offers.  The Elite 360 should sell at $249 or even $199.

Notice I'm not talking about the games here.  "Good" or "bad" games are a purely subjective matter.

If I combine a microwave oven and a 360 into one package and keep the price at $300, the 360 will essentially be saving you $30-50 on a microwave. That's value. Unfortunately, not everyone gives a shit about having a microwave and a game console all in one, and that's what you don't seem to comprehend. Value only has value so long as it adds a feature the prospective buyer cares about. What you don't seem to understand is that the value of the 360 is in that final sentence you can't seem to wrap your head around, the games. Quality is subjective, but general appeal is not and appeal comes from sales.

What I'd like you to do is this. Do this exact same scenario with the Wii. Take games out of the equation (since it's all subjective) and just judge "value". You'll see even more value on the PS3's end, and yet none of that will propel it past the Wii outside of a possible initial spike over the next few weeks. Sometimes you have to understand that what people see appealing in a console cannot always be presented in a feature comparison chart. If you make all your purchases off of value charts then congrats. Most people don't.

wait a sec, you saying that the xbox doesnt actually come with a microwave? is it a quick cooker oven instead? because thats what i have been using mine for, it gets really hot sometimes and when the lights turn red it tells me that its fully cooked. i seriously thought it was a microwave, thats why i jumped in.....
