I agree completely, but nobody wants to hear this.
It's in SCE's best interest to bring PS2 games to the PS3 when they can sell them through PSN. They really don't (and shouldn't) care about PS2 games being sold on the secondary market.
You have those with big libraries of PS2 games that want to just keep playing them on their new console, and then you have those who never owned a PS2, but want to be able to pick up a bunch of games cheap or used and still have the "prestige" of playing them on a newer console in the PS3.
I would think that most who put a really high priority on PS2 BC would have been wise enough to pick up one of the earlier hardware BC PS3s (and many did, hence the premium they tend to go for) when they were widely available, but I suspect those who didn't either assumed PS2 BC would come back because they wanted it to or they just weren't willing to pay for it and wanted SCE to pay for it instead by adding it back (and yes, the chip set did cost them more money).
They were losing money on every console sold. People wanted it cheaper even as they were being sold at a loss. Console has to be made cheaper before that can happen; minority value feature is removed (and yes, it is a minority feature as most people buying a PS3 are presumably interested in playing PS3 games) and suddenly those who were squawking about the price are now squawking about that feature they weren't willing to pay for in the first place.
But, everyone's entitled to demand what they want at the price they want. Unfortunately, they're just not entitled to actually get it.
I'm sure most people would like $5,000 worth of options thrown into their new car for free by the dealer for example, but generally, not too realistic.
THis is a stupid move.... i really wanted a PS3 with backwards compatibility
