Forums - PC - Would you buy a PC with a 7 series Nvidia GPU for .....$299

"With a PC which I intended to use for gaming? no I wouldn't, because I know so many of the great games coming for the PC over the next couple of years won't run on such an old machine."

You'd be surprised. Pretty well anyone could take a desktop from the past 4 years, throw a decent GPU in it, and then be ready to play any game - most don't recommend more a mid-range dual-core processor, unless we're talking sloppy ports like GTAIV or RE5.

For 400$, I could easily build a PC that would blow PS360 out of the water. And this wouldn't require that you buy overpriced wireless cards, hard drives, and so on.

A 7 series GPU will play MW2, Starcraft 2 and Supreme Commander 2 very poorly.

So no.

supreme commander 2 is supposed to be more optimized, so it will probably run better

that's not true, TONS of people jumped from an nvidia card to an HD4000 card. That is if the steam survey thing is correct.

Sure, tons of people have bought ATI cards, but most people aren't fanboys. In my experience, the fanboys and those who "must have" the latest and greatest tend to overlap fairly heavily.

Of course not, i'd rather get a PS3.

Yeah i would get that.

No! I could get a MUCH better card for----*falls for trap*

I wouldn't, the 7 series GPU is rather obsolete, it was obsolete the week after the PS3 released with the 8800GT(x/s) series.

Tease.

Buying a comparable 7800GTX and pairing it with lower clock speed dual core CPU (under 3.2ghz) would not provide the same gaming performance as a $199 console in the 360 (even without HDD, it still plays all the games the same), or a $299 console in the PS3 at those prices.

There's no way to spin that.

Console games are hardware optimized over time, even as the price continues to drop. Result; you see more being done with the same hardware as the generation goes deeper.

Nobody in the PC world optimizes for lower spec VGA cards and builds by contrast. Making it run on low spec systems, period is the only priority, regardless of resolution, frame rate, effects and all the other reasons we build decent (not minimum spec) dedicated gaming PCs that cost considerably more than any console.

In the case of the gaming PC, you get what you pay for. And it always pays to have higher spec hardware in the case of the PC if you're playing current games.
