Forums - Microsoft - Just an observation

I've been going to vgchartz for some time now (mostly for the sales figures) but a while ago I might an account to comment. I've been looking around and I feel as if there is one big misconception around here, that being: that we here (at vgchartz) are the average consumer.

I've been seeing a lot of threads with statements like:

- Sony is cheaper when your comparing console + add-ons.

- Sony drops the price,  now Microsoft needs to do the same.

- Microsoft needs to get more exclusives or they're done for.

Maybe I'm wrong but for me Microsoft's X360 businessplan is really simple: be cheaper then Sony and offer the same games. Now first party exclusives will always be exclusive but the 360 gets all the big multiplatform titles. That's what it's about for Microsoft, you can get franchises like The Elder Scrolls, GTA, Need for Speed, FIFA, Madden, Call of Duty, movie game titles, Tomb Raider, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, Command & Conquer, Half Life, Prince of Peria, Hitman, Starwars games, Rock Band, Doom, Far Cry and many others with great graphics for a cheaper price due to a cheaper console.

I here people complain about how Microsoft gets Playstation franchises like Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear and Final Fantasy but doesn't try hard enough to get exclusive games. I agree, but then again I'm a gamer so I don't mind spending extra money to get all the multiplats and then some. When you take the time to make an vgchartz account (or even know about it) then obviously you are more hardcore then the average console owner. The average console owner just wants to get their hands on GTA4, FIFA10, Madden10, etc, they don't care for the few exclusives that they have to miss out on because they get most of it on a 199,- console.

I know that  the 300,- PS3 slim will effect the success of this businessplan but you have to admit it has been succesful so far. All those threads about how 2009 ''IS'' a good year for the 360 and how 2010 is going to be amazing aren't needed because that just important for us, not for the mainstream gamer. You might confince a couple of gamers that the 360 is still going strong with exclusives but it doesn't matter in the end. Smart prices and stripping the console down to it's basics has kept the 360 above the PS3 in sales. It also worked for the PS2 last gen and it's part of the succes formula of the Wii right now.

I don't think the 360 is going to beat the Wii (different market), but it can stay above the PS3 using the same businessplan. When I look around here I feel as if people have forgotten that all of us here are very similiar in our gaming needs and very different from the needs of those that don't even know about this site.

Just an observation: You're a huge M$ fan and don't like the boasting coming from the sony side since the gamescon news so you took it upon yourself to defend the 360 as much as you could just to make sure everyone on here realizes it still exists.

Don't worry, we know the 360 exists, we acknowledge that M$ businessplan is good and we know the 360 has permanently nuked the ps3 here in the U.S. I hope that helped.

i agree ps3 rocks, try harder microsoft

I wish I just read Pristine's summary first :P

"that being: that we here (at vgchartz) are the average consumer."

I'd have to dissagree. Parents in general are the average consumers.

Just an observation: The boasting has been going on for a couple of years now, not just since this week. It goes all 3 ways though, it just seems that the uber sony fans are the most annoying.

MS needs more exclusives or there done is false, tell me when KZ2 sells 10 million.

This = just another PS3 ownz 360 thread.

No not really, I picked the 360 because it had Oblivion as a console exclusive at that time, I don't regret my decision because of Fable and Mass Effect but I will seriously sonsider a Playstation in the next generation because Sony does seem to care more for exclusives and since they will get the multiplats anyway it might be the better choice. I just see what Microsoft is doing and I don't like it but it does work (for now).

''  Now since it is, as you say, in a different market than the 360, in which market is the 360? ''

Your right I wasn't clear about that, maybe a different segment is a better term to use. I was hinting at the Wii offering different games and the Wii-Mote as a unique selling point. If your want that then it doesnt matter how cheap the 360 gets you won't be persuaded to get a 360 instead. So Nintendo is concentrating on a different segment that Sony and Microsoft seemed to ignore until recently.

THIS, this is exacly what I'm talking about. Who cares about KZ2? Apparantly you do and more then likely a higher percentage of people here then in the general gaming population. Wii games dominate the sale charts and the Wii still outsells the competition but if they were to make such a list of just vgchartz members then this wouldn't be the case. Halo3 outselling KZ2 is just one indicator but doesn't say a lot, yet many people seem to believe that it means the 360 is better or more succesful.

I think the 360 is going great and someone else thinks the PS3 is going great, we can discuss that but here we seem to use our own experiences and preferences as decisive factors. That's my observation.
