I've been going to vgchartz for some time now (mostly for the sales figures) but a while ago I might an account to comment. I've been looking around and I feel as if there is one big misconception around here, that being: that we here (at vgchartz) are the average consumer.
I've been seeing a lot of threads with statements like:
- Sony is cheaper when your comparing console + add-ons.
- Sony drops the price, now Microsoft needs to do the same.
- Microsoft needs to get more exclusives or they're done for.
Maybe I'm wrong but for me Microsoft's X360 businessplan is really simple: be cheaper then Sony and offer the same games. Now first party exclusives will always be exclusive but the 360 gets all the big multiplatform titles. That's what it's about for Microsoft, you can get franchises like The Elder Scrolls, GTA, Need for Speed, FIFA, Madden, Call of Duty, movie game titles, Tomb Raider, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, Command & Conquer, Half Life, Prince of Peria, Hitman, Starwars games, Rock Band, Doom, Far Cry and many others with great graphics for a cheaper price due to a cheaper console.
I here people complain about how Microsoft gets Playstation franchises like Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear and Final Fantasy but doesn't try hard enough to get exclusive games. I agree, but then again I'm a gamer so I don't mind spending extra money to get all the multiplats and then some. When you take the time to make an vgchartz account (or even know about it) then obviously you are more hardcore then the average console owner. The average console owner just wants to get their hands on GTA4, FIFA10, Madden10, etc, they don't care for the few exclusives that they have to miss out on because they get most of it on a 199,- console.
I know that the 300,- PS3 slim will effect the success of this businessplan but you have to admit it has been succesful so far. All those threads about how 2009 ''IS'' a good year for the 360 and how 2010 is going to be amazing aren't needed because that just important for us, not for the mainstream gamer. You might confince a couple of gamers that the 360 is still going strong with exclusives but it doesn't matter in the end. Smart prices and stripping the console down to it's basics has kept the 360 above the PS3 in sales. It also worked for the PS2 last gen and it's part of the succes formula of the Wii right now.
I don't think the 360 is going to beat the Wii (different market), but it can stay above the PS3 using the same businessplan. When I look around here I feel as if people have forgotten that all of us here are very similiar in our gaming needs and very different from the needs of those that don't even know about this site.
