Forums - General - Why do we call these things "threads"?

I've always wondered this very thing.. anyone with an idea?

I guess you could call a forum a piece of fabric and every "thread" in it adds to the size and strength.

Because they're just like threads in the real world.

You find one while wandering in the wilderness, and decide to satisfy your curiosity by following it. Next thing you know, a wicked witch has shoved you into an oven and you're roasting alive.
